At the same time, Americans are living longer, stretching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/retire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">retirement from<\/a> roughly 15 years to closer to three decades in some cases, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/news\/trends\/social-security-longevity-tax-torpedo-retirement-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to Realtor.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 68 million Americans rely on Social Security benefits as of April 2026, according to the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting until age 70 to start collecting Social Security locks in the highest monthly payment, but claiming earlier may help protect against possible cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/trump-sign-order-aiming-help-expand-access-retirement-accounts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TRUMP SIGNS ORDER AIMING TO HELP EXPAND ACCESS TO RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/social-security-istock.jpg\" alt=\"Social Security\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Social Security could reach insolvency by late 2032 or early 2033. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/social-security-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Social Security<\/a> certainly has a funding problem,&#8221; said Evan Mills, a financial analyst at Scholar Advising. &#8220;If you claim now, you&#8217;re basically making a bet that Congress does nothing about the underfunding problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But delaying benefits carries its own risks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re also making a bet that you&#8217;re not going to live long enough to regret taking a smaller check if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Congress does<\/a> step in and fix the funding problem, which they have plenty of levers to pull,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Rising costs are adding pressure. Inflation, higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">property taxes<\/a>, insurance and healthcare expenses are also squeezing retirees, particularly those on fixed incomes, Realtor.com reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many retirees built plans assuming Social Security would cover a larger percentage of their living expenses than it realistically will,&#8221; said Elias Friedman, certified financial planner and founder at Kadima Wealth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/work-more-lose-less-new-bill-aims-end-social-security-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WORK MORE, LOSE LESS? Claiming benefits early while withdrawing from retirement accounts can trigger so-called &#8220;tax torpedoes,&#8221; leading to a sudden increase in tax liability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It takes a bigger bite out of your Social Security benefits than you would expect,&#8221; George Dimov, CPA and founder of Dimov Tax, told Realtor.com.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, experts say not to make decisions based on fear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I advise clients to be careful about making major Social Security decisions based purely on scary headlines,&#8221; Friedman said. &#8220;I still believe delaying benefits can make a lot of sense for healthy retirees who expect longevity, especially married couples where maximizing the higher earner\u2019s benefit can help protect the surviving spouse down the road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/personal-finance\/nearly-half-gen-x-workers-delaying-retirement-rising-costs-stagnant-wages-drain-savings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NEARLY HALF OF GEN X WORKERS ARE DELAYING RETIREMENT AS RISING COSTS, STAGNANT WAGES DRAIN SAVINGS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Retirement-savings-jar.jpg\" alt=\"Savings jar\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Taxes can further complicate the decision.
