That meant he and actor-producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/nicolas-cage\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nicolas-cage_1\" data-tag=\"nicolas-cage\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Cage<\/a> could spend more of their time, all the way back to writing the pilot, unpacking a single question: \u201cWhat if we made a Bogart movie where Bogart just happened to be Spider-Man?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cEvery single day he\u2019d come to set with a different reference: \u2018This is Bogart from The Big Sleep, this is going to be Peter Lorre. This is going to be Edward G. Robinson,&#8217;\u201d Uziel, whose own inspirations included Third Man, Double Indemnity, The Thin Man, His Girl Friday, L.A. Confidential, Miller\u2019s Crossing and Casablanca, said of Cage\u2019s commitment to shaping the character and world. \u201cBeyond that, we didn\u2019t want to make a version of Spider-Man that anyone had seen before. Nic was never going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/spider-man-noir-official-trailer-nicolas-cage-1236575178\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The first season<\/a> \u2014 which premieres domestically on MGM+\u2019s linear broadcast channel on May 25 and globally on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/prime-video\/\" id=\"auto-tag_prime-video_1\" data-tag=\"prime-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Video<\/a> May 27 \u2014 expands the story of Spider-Man Noir, who made his animated onscreen debut in 2018\u2019s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. \u201cThey\u2019re connected for sure. There\u2019s inspiration being taken there,\u201d Uziel said. \u201cBut when you\u2019re making an eight-episode television series, you\u2019re going to really expand it and broaden it. In live action, you get to see so much more of Nic\u2019s performance and you can really fully realize New York in the \u201930s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe just were like, if this is the world, it\u2019s the \u201830s and this is the guy, where does that take us?\u201d added co-showrunner Steve Lightfoot. \u201cIt all starts and ends with the character, and we were just doing such a different version, who has wider powers, that everything led from that. He is older, he is wiser, he is maybe a little less excited to do it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOriginally dubbed Noir, the show was retitled to Spider-Noir ahead of its release to better encapsulate its blending of genres, said executive producer Dan Shear. \u201cIt\u2019s really a merging of two genres. We\u2019re telling a noir, but we\u2019re also telling a Spider-Verse show and the title represents the intersection of those genres, which kind of creates a third new thing that we hadn\u2019t seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor producers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/phil-lord\/\" id=\"auto-tag_phil-lord_1\" data-tag=\"phil-lord\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Lord<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/christopher-miller\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-miller_1\" data-tag=\"christopher-miller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Miller<\/a>, the TV series needed not only to capture elements of the noir genre, but also, \u201cit should be funny. Nic is a funny person. Spider-Man was always quippy. And some of our favorite noirs are really funny, but also emotional,\u201d Miller explained. \u201cAs the show gets weirder, you\u2019re letting Nic be Nic, and then also some of the crazy stuff they were doing in the surrealist horror noir space of the period seemed like a great opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCage\u2019s co-stars saw the actor\u2019s full-bodied commitment to delivering on the Spider-Noir universe helped elevate what actor Lucas Shaw described as a new kind of \u201cbadass adult\u201d version of Spider-Man and one where Sandman actor Jack Huston said the heroes and villains do \u201cbecome a bit of their own metaphor and that\u2019s a beautiful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cNic is unlike any other actor you\u2019ve ever seen. He pulled from Bugs Bunny to play this character,\u201d said Lamorne Morris, who portrays Robbie Robertson, a journalist and friend of Cage\u2019s Reilly. \u201cHis whole thing is he is a spider trying to learn how to be a human. Whereas I think other characters are the reverse \u2014 they are humans playing the spider and I think it\u2019s a completely unique take on it.\u201d Added Brendan Gleeson, who portrays the series lead antagonist, mobster Silvermane: \u201cIt was just a joy to be working with Nic because you toss it across and it comes back with twice a spin on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCage not only stars but also serves as a producer, supporting the series through its \u201cTrue Hue\u201d color journey, headed up by colorist Pankaj Bajpai. \u201cIt was important to me to get the series made, and I knew there was a lot of trepidation about it being shot in black and white,\u201d the actor and executive producer said on Wednesday\u2019s carpet. \u201cI could tell that some of the folks in the studio were nervous. So I said, \u2018You don\u2019t only have to shoot it in black and white; you can also get teenagers, who might be watching, by shooting in color with almost a colorized feel. That single decision affected everything from performances to the music to cinematography. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAhead of the series\u2019 release, reports of budget disagreements between the producing team and Sony Pictures Television emerged, but Shear clarified any budgeting conversations were addressed early in the production process. \u201cBefore production, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/amazon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_amazon_1\" data-tag=\"amazon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a> came to us and asked us if we could also make a color version of the show to go with it \u2014 two versions of the show for the audience. We accepted the challenge, worked out our plan for it and it was really seen as an efficient, effective production,\u201d Shear said on the carpet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor Cage, releasing the latest chapter in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-phil-lord-chris-miller-1235497971\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sony\u2019s Spider-Verse<\/a> in black and white wasn\u2019t just about staying true to the period and style of his specific Spider-Man. \u201cI designed my performance to fit within the black-and-white format, but my dream is that [young viewers] will see the black and white after they do the color, and they\u2019re going to want to look at the old movies, all that great wealth of American cinema that we have, and all these great old actors, and what they were doing, what that style was like,\u201d he explained. \u201cI also say, it doesn\u2019t matter if a 13-year-old doesn\u2019t know who Humphrey Bogart is. It works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe show\u2019s explicit decision to cross period with modernity may also work in its favor in terms of capturing a younger audience, regardless of which version they watch it in. \u201cWe wanted to be truthful to the period, but we never wanted it to feel like a pastiche,\u201d said co-showrunner Steve Lightfoot. \u201cWe wanted it to be its own thing, and if you\u2019re writing a show now, it\u2019s hopefully going to speak to now. When you look back at those old movies, they\u2019re very of their time, and we wanted to make sure that our show felt now even though it\u2019s set in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs for the future of the series, Miller \u201cwould be happy to do more,\u201d with Lord continuing, \u201cWe are television producers.
