{"id":643586,"date":"2026-05-14T23:34:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T23:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/643586\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T23:34:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T23:34:13","slug":"free-youth-heart-screenings-in-tri-cities-could-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/643586\/","title":{"rendered":"Free youth heart screenings in Tri-Cities could save lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kennewick, Wash.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Stark-Steele will spend her Friday working to prevent another Tri-Cities family from going through the same tragedy hers did.<\/p>\n<p>Her son, Payton Steele, an avid hockey player, graduated from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/kamiakin.ksd.org\/\">Kamiakin High School in Kennewick<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a year later he suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died at the age of 19.<\/p>\n<p>Only at the emergency room did doctors finally discover with a noninvasive EKG that he was born with a heart condition. His Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome could have been treated if he and his parents had known he had it.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, May 15, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nickoftimefoundation.org\/\">Nick of Time Foundation<\/a> will offer free <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nickoftimefoundation.org\/programs\/ekg-youth-heart-screenings\/\">youth heart screenings<\/a> for ages 12 to 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the HAPO Center at <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/HAPO+Center\/@46.262867,-119.2083591,14.17z\/data=%214m6%213m5%211s0x54987b8906cefef1:0xffd64bd59bae4d07%218m2%213d46.2694282%214d-119.1760015%2116s%2Fg%2F1tn4xwq7?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDUxMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D\">6600 Burden Blvd., Pasco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in young people exercising or playing sports., happening every other day in the United States, according to the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Most have hidden cardiac abnormalities with no warning signs until they suffer a sudden cardiac arrest, according to the foundation, started in Mill Creek, Wash., by family members honoring a young athlete who died.<\/p>\n<p>An EKG, or electrocardiogram, can tease on the condition, but they are not part of most sports physicals.<\/p>\n<p>                                          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image1.jpeg\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"1560\" title=\"image1.jpeg\" alt=\"Young athlete Payton Steele died of sudden cardiac arrest in 2025 less than a year after graduating from Kamiakin High in Kennewick.\"\/>                                                                                    Young athlete Payton Steele died of sudden cardiac arrest in 2025 less than a year after graduating from Kamiakin High in Kennewick.                                                                                                                                                                        Courtesy Michelle Stark-Steele                                                                                        Pasco event to take walk-ins<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/976400361516048\">Pasco event<\/a> will offer a medical history review and noninvasive EKGs by medical professionals. If results indicate a need, a heart sound physical and ultrasound of the heart also may be performed.<\/p>\n<p>The even also offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training to prepare young people for an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Screening is free and no insurance is needed, but some people choose to make a $25 donation. An EKG may cost $150 at a doctor\u2019s office and an ultrasound is far more.<\/p>\n<p>The event has the capacity to screen hundreds of young people, and walk-ins are welcome. Courtesy Michelle Stark-Steele                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayton is so incredibly, painfully missed by everyone who knew him,\u201d says his mother. \u201cAnd I just really, really want to push for those screenings so that another family does not have to go through the nightmare that we went through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Had the Steele family known that Payton was born with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which caused an extra pathway in his heart, it could have been fixed with cardiac ablation, his mother said.<\/p>\n<p>Tri-Cities hockey player\u2019s legacy<\/p>\n<p>Steele\u2019s mother says her son\u2019s twin loves were hockey and baseball. Courtesy Michelle Stark-Steele                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>After graduating from high school he was an electrical apprentice and shared an apartment in Richland with a brother.<\/p>\n<p>Before midnight on March 16, 2025, Stark-Steele and her husband, Scott Sutton, were woken by a phone call.<\/p>\n<p>Payton was not breathing and her older son was doing CPR while waiting for emergency responders.<\/p>\n<p>His mother said she has no memory of getting dressed or driving to her sons\u2019 apartment, but arrived to find emergency responders trying to revive Payton. Benton-Franklin Humane Society                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Payton had already signed up to be an organ donor, and his teammates, friends, family and hospital workers gathered in the hospital\u2019s hallway to follow him as he was wheeled on a final \u201chonor walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donations included one of his kidneys to a former co-worker of his father.<\/p>\n<p>It was a final act of generosity from a boy, who started asking at the age of 8 that friends not bring him party gifts for his Dec. 23 birthday. Instead, he asked that they bring money or food for the Benton Franklin Humane Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome legacies are written not in years, but in love,\u201d the Humane Society posted on Dec. 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo honor Payton\u2019s legacy, his heart for animals, and the love his family and friends continue to carry forward, each year our shelter will proudly display the \u2018Payton Giving Tree,\u2019\u201d the society posted. \u201cThis tree will stand as a reminder of kindness, community and a young life that continues to make a difference. \u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"summary gray\">This story was originally published May 14, 2026 at 1:55 PM.<\/p>\n<p>        Related Stories from  Tri-City Herald<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kennewick, Wash.
