{"id":646844,"date":"2026-05-16T14:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T14:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/646844\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T14:39:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T14:39:12","slug":"humans-in-the-andes-have-evolved-a-strange-digestive-superpower-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/646844\/","title":{"rendered":"Humans in The Andes Have Evolved a Strange Digestive Superpower : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For all humanity&#8217;s success as a species at the top of its game, it&#8217;s likely that we&#8217;ll never finish evolving.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-are-still-evolving-before-our-eyes-on-the-tibetan-plateau\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passive selection pressures<\/a> to those that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/human-evolution-may-be-undergoing-a-major-shift-right-before-our-eyes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">self-inflicted<\/a>, the forces that shape our ongoing evolutionary journey are as fascinating as they are diverse.<\/p>\n<p>Now, new research has revealed a previously unknown way in which people living high in the Andes may be continuing to evolve, and the catalyst is surprisingly humble.<\/p>\n<p>This population was among the first to domesticate the now-ubiquitous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/potatoes-are-actually-are-good-for-us-here-s-six-reason-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potato<\/a> thousands of years ago \u2013 which could explain why their bodies show evidence of an enhanced ability to digest starch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/woman-quechua.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200689\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A Quechua woman preparing a traditional freeze-dried potato dish on the Andean Altiplano. (hadynyah\/E+\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The high-altitude Andes are known for being a rich region for understanding human evolutionary adaptation \u2013 for instance,  hypoxia, in which tissues do not get enough oxygen,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/indigenous-andeans-have-a-digestive-superpower-potatoes-research\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says anthropologist Abigail Bigham<\/a> of the University of California, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This new research highlights how the Andes are useful for understanding human evolutionary adaptation to other selective environmental pressures like diet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Evolution is a process that combines time with consistent exposure to a selection pressure, which some bodies can handle better than others.<\/p>\n<p>That can include extreme conditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/extreme-fire-amoeba-smashes-record-for-heat-tolerance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scorching heat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-is-the-first-animal-ever-found-that-doesnt-need-oxygen-to-survive\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complete lack of oxygen<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chernobyl-fungus-appears-to-have-evolved-an-incredible-ability\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous radiation levels<\/a>, but also gentler pressures, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-in-the-andes-appear-to-have-evolved-a-strange-genetic-ability\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constant low-level toxin exposure<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/south-asias-dairy-intolerance-could-help-explain-our-ability-to-drink-milk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kinds of foods people rely on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/andes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200691\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The Andes represent one of the most extreme environments where humans have settled and thrived. (\u00a9 Marco Bottigelli\/Moment\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, a team of researchers including Bigham found that Indigenous populations living in the Peruvian Andes appeared to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/ajpa.24656\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have genetic enhancements<\/a> related to starch digestion when compared with populations that adopted potatoes more recently.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the team has expanded their research to include genomes from around the world \u2013 and found that the Quechua people of highland Indigenous Andean ancestry seem better equipped for starch digestion than almost any other population on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Biologists have long suspected that different groups of humans have evolved genetic adaptations in response to their diets,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/news\/news-releases.host.html\/content\/shared\/university\/news\/ub-reporter-articles\/stories\/2026\/05\/potatoes-genetic-makeup-andeans.detail.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says evolutionary anthropologist Omer Gokcumen<\/a> of the University at Buffalo, &#8220;but there are very few cases where the evidence is this strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gene-copies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"626\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200690\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A map of AMY1 copy numbers across global populations. Commun.<\/a>, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The clue lies in a gene called AMY1, found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adn0609\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pretty much everyone<\/a> in the world. This gene is involved in the production of the salivary enzyme amylase, which helps <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/ng2123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">break down starch<\/a> at the very start of the digestive pipeline \u2013 the mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals typically carry <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-024-07911-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2 to 20 copies<\/a> of this gene per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/genetics-glossary\/Diploid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diploid cell<\/a>; the global median, according to the data in the new study, is 7 copies.<\/p>\n<p>After analyzing the genomes of 3,723 individuals from 85 populations around the world, the researchers found that Indigenous Quechua people from Peru have a median of 10 copies of the gene.<\/p>\n<p>This, the researchers estimated, would have conferred a 1.24 percent survival or reproductive advantage per generation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/hasselback.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"482\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200692\"  \/>Potatoes are packed with nutrients and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/11-things-people-think-are-terrible-for-your-diet-that-actually-aren-t\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">really good for us<\/a>, extra AMY1 copies or no. (LauriPatterson\/E+\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evolution is chiseling a sculpture, not constructing a building,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/news\/news-releases.host.html\/content\/shared\/university\/news\/ub-reporter-articles\/stories\/2026\/05\/potatoes-genetic-makeup-andeans.detail.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gokcumen explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not as if Indigenous Andeans gained additional AMY1 copies once they started eating potatoes. Instead, those with lower copy numbers were eliminated from the population over time, perhaps because they had fewer offspring, and the ones with the higher copy numbers remained.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Using genetic dating methods and modeling, the researchers then traced the rise of this change. Their dating methods showed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adn0609\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gene was present<\/a> before the domestication of potatoes, but began to increase around 10,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>We know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/surprising-study-finds-potatoes-evolved-from-tomato-ancestor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potato domestication<\/a> in the Andes began around 10,000 to 6,000 years ago \u2013 a timing that aligns with an increase in the number of copies of the gene, which aids potato digestion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/po-tay-toes.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"268\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200683\"  \/>(New Line Cinema)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, other populations descended from the Maya, without a long history of potato farming, do not have the same adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>So the timing is probably not a coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This direct comparison is one of the major reasons why we think their high number of AMY1 copies in the Peruvians did not evolve just by chance but instead linked to their long history of eating potatoes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/news\/news-releases.host.html\/content\/shared\/university\/news\/ub-reporter-articles\/stories\/2026\/05\/potatoes-genetic-makeup-andeans.detail.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says evolutionary geneticist Luane Landau<\/a> of the University at Buffalo.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a result that shows that genetic adaptation to dietary changes is possible in a relatively short timeframe, adding a dimension to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/paleo-diet-debunked-ancient-humans-ate-plants-study-shows\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debate about the so-called paleo diet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, some scientists have made a strong argument that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/human-evolution-may-be-undergoing-a-major-shift-right-before-our-eyes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">technology is becoming the dominant force<\/a> driving human evolution. Now, it&#8217;s common to eat food that has either been imported directly or grown from imported species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For most of human history, people ate the same thing their ancestors had eaten for thousands of years. You quite literally needed to migrate across the world to change your diet.
