While K-pop superstars BTS have been enjoying the warm California sun<\/a> the past week, group leader RM groused that it was harshing its Stanford Stadium debut.<\/p>\n \u201cGuys, this is very unusual,\u201d RM told the estimated 50,000 fans that packed the outdoor venue at the group\u2019s first sold-out show on Saturday, May 16. \u201cIt\u2019s too early and too bright, so it might be a little embarrassing when we\u2019re on this stage. Saturday\u2019s concert started promptly at 7 p.m., an hour earlier than other tour stops, to abide by the outdoor venue\u2019s strict 10 p.m. curfew. The sun\u2019s rays washed out the creative team\u2019s lighting, and thousands of fan-held light sticks couldn\u2019t fully illuminate the stadium to create a unifying sea of color until more than an hour into the show.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n But there was an upside to this matinee feeling, RM noted later: \u201cI can see all of your faces.\u201d<\/p>\n Personal connection is something BTS has carefully built since the seven-member boy band burst onto the scene in 2013. That bond was on full display for two hours during day one of its three-night Stanford Stadium run as BTS \u2014 RM, Jin, Jimin, Suga, V, J-Hope, Jung Kook \u2014 gave its dedicated ARMY (aka Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth) fan base a carefully curated set that leaned almost exclusively into its new album \u201cArirang,\u201d with a couple of its massive hits and a few surprises mixed in.<\/p>\n San Francisco Chronicle Logo<\/p>\n Make us a Preferred Source to get more of our news when you search.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Add Preferred Source<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n BTS in 2026 is not the same BTS that played Oakland Arena in 2018. They opted for a performance that allowed them more freedom to interact with fans and each other. The expansive circular stage with rising platforms and catwalks jutting to the stadiums\u2019 four corners allowed them to joke,\u00a0tease<\/a> and cajole each other while hyping the crowd.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n On this night, their famously synchronized<\/a>, disciplined<\/a> and emotive<\/a> choreography was employed like foie gras on a fancy dinner plate \u2014 sparingly, but oh so exquisite that left you wanting more. Jin, Jung Kook, Jimin and V were able to let go without worrying as much about staying in lock step.<\/p>\n As South Korea\u2019s primary soft power ambassadors, BTS honored its heritage throughout the show in both subtle and overt ways. The black leather \u201clyrical armor\u201d outfits they emerged in were custom-designed in collaboration with Songzio<\/a> and reinterpreted historical Korean garments. The rap banger \u201cBody to Body\u201d incorporated the traditional folk song \u201cArirang\u201d as a multicultural, multigenerational crowd of fans valiantly chanted along in Korean. During \u201c2.0,\u201d backup dancers paraded around the stage with banners featuring the red, white, blue and yellow colors of the Korean color spectrum known as Obangsaek.<\/p>\n BTS\u2019s fan service was top notch. They dusted off \u201cN.O.\u201d and \u201cAnpanman\u201d for the early ARMY enlistees and rewarded their knowledge with genuine enthusiasm<\/a>. They avoided the temptation to medley-ify past hits and performed \u201cIdol\u201d and \u201cFake Love\u201d in full, which resulted in euphonious singalongs.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n BTS performs the first of\u00a0three concerts on\u00a0its \u201cArirang\u201d world tour at\u00a0Stanford Stadium on\u00a0Saturday, May 16, 2026.<\/p>\n Big Hit Music<\/p>\n The English-language crossovers \u201cButter\u201d and \u201cDynamite\u201d were presented with casual flair as if they were tipsy off makgeolli and group-singing with the crowd in a Hongdae noraebang at 2 a.m. During \u201cDynamite,\u201d Jimin, V, Jin and Jungkook even engaged in an impromptu pop-lock cypher<\/a> with Jin ignoring the passed directive, choosing to humorously stick to the choreo script.<\/p>\n BTS ended the show seated next to each other on the rotating center stage to sing some of the chillest tracks from \u201cArirang,\u201d \u201cPlease\u201d and, ironically, \u201cInto the Sun,\u201d in the cool night air. This time, the stadium was bathed in warm amber tones as light sticks simulated the sun\u2019s rays as confetti cannons popped off.<\/p>\n The concert\u2019s less physical format read as a form of self-preservation, understandable for a group committed to 85 shows through March 2027. BTS has absorbed more than 15 years of intense training and chronic injuries, with RM most recently suffering a sprained ankle<\/a> and partial ligament tear during a tour rehearsal in March 2026 (he appeared to be fully recovered Saturday).\u00a0<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The Stanford concert showed that BTS isn\u2019t ready for the nostalgia circuit.
