{"id":649824,"date":"2026-05-18T06:13:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T06:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/649824\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T06:13:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T06:13:04","slug":"pga-championship-boosted-some-newtown-square-restaurants-but-hurt-other-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/649824\/","title":{"rendered":"PGA Championship boosted some Newtown Square restaurants but hurt other small businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club has been billed as a boon for the Philadelphia region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The PGA expected <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-2026-preparations-aronimink-20260505.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-2026-preparations-aronimink-20260505.html\">more than 200,000 spectators <\/a>to flock to the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/newtown-square\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newtown Square<\/a> course for the six-day event. During a Saturday visit, Pennsylvania Gov. <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/josh-shapiro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Shapiro<\/a> said the tournament, which ends Sunday, would generate about $200 million for the local economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But a couple miles away, outside the lush confines of the country club and away from the TV cameras, some small-business owners said they\u2019re still waiting for a boost from the major championship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cEvery day, it\u2019s hurt us,\u201d said Luigi Lemme, co-owner of Luigi and Giovanni, as he stood in the cheese aisle of his Italian market on Sunday morning. A couple customers trickled in. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Business has been slow all week, Lemme said. He declined to specify how much sales were down but said the shop would be in a \u201cbad situation\u201d if not for a tournament-related catering contract. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Across St. Alban\u2019s Circle at Bunny Hare\u2019s gift shop, owner Anne Marie Hare has faced a similar slump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She has watched buses ferry thousands of golf fans to and from the official parking lots on State Route 252 and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/west-chester\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">West Chester<\/a> Pike. Other spectators have <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/consumer\/pga-championship-aronimink-parking-lots-homeowners-profit-20260514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/consumer\/pga-championship-aronimink-parking-lots-homeowners-profit-20260514.html\">paid to park on homeowners\u2019 lawns<\/a> near Aronimink or taken shuttles from the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/paoli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paoli<\/a> <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/septa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SEPTA<\/a> Station, on the other side of the course from her store. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/consumer\/pga-championship-aronimink-parking-lots-homeowners-profit-20260514.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Pop-up parking lots near the PGA Championship abound, with homeowners looking to cash in on the crowds<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">None are stopping to shop, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cMost of their money is being spent out at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-merchandise-tent-aronimink-golf-gear-20260511.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-merchandise-tent-aronimink-golf-gear-20260511.html\">the merch tent<\/a>\u201d at Aronimink, Hare said. Food and nonalcoholic drinks are also <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-philadelphia-parking-transit-septa-food-tickets-20260504.html#what-food-and-drinks-are-available\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/sports\/pga-championship-philadelphia-parking-transit-septa-food-tickets-20260504.html#what-food-and-drinks-are-available\">included with PGA Championship admission<\/a>, she noted, so spectators don\u2019t necessarily need to stop at other nearby businesses for a bite to eat either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Meanwhile, she said, she thinks locals have stayed away from Newtown Square due to concerns about traffic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI wish I was busier,\u201d Hare said. But overall, the PGA Championship is \u201ca great thing for the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some restaurants, hotels see PGA Championship uptick<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">While some business owners say they have struggled to compete with the PGA Championship, others say they have benefited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/best-hoagies-philadelphia-map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/best-hoagies-philadelphia-map.html\">A Cut Above Deli<\/a> has seen a \u201cbig time\u201d boost in business \u2014 likely a 20% to 30% increase compared with a typical May week \u2014 said manager Nick Carneglia. TV broadcast crews have ordered hoagie trays, he said, as have locals who are hosting PGA gatherings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe restaurants are doing really well,\u201d said Sheila Turner-Hilliard, president of the Newtown Square Business Association and owner of From The Top Studio of Dance. \u201cEverybody I\u2019ve talked to has had something good to say about this tournament from start to finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At times, some spots at the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/ellispreserve.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ellispreserve.com\/\">mixed-use Ellis Preserve complex<\/a> have been \u201cpacked\u201d with golf fans, Turner-Hilliard said. The center has several regional-chain restaurants, such as LaScala\u2019s Fire and Sedona Taphouse; a Whole Foods Market; and two hotels, a Hilton Garden Inn and an AC Hotel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s been pretty exciting for us,\u201d said Laura Roberts, general manager of AC Hotel Newtown Square.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The 140-room property has been \u201cmostly sold out\u201d all week, with \u201cvery little availability,\u201d Roberts said. The bookings are from \u201ca mixture of PGA golfers, staff, families, as well as just our normal clientele and then spectators.\u201d There were also guests of several weddings that took place at Ellis Preserve\u2019s two on-site venues. <\/p>\n<p>Other business owners shrug or pivot<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Elsewhere in Newtown Square, other business owners said they had not felt any impact from the PGA Championship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At Weinrich\u2019s Bakery, cookies decorated with the image of a golf ball on a green were among the wide array of treats on display Sunday. But PGA fans haven\u2019t been flooding in to buy them, said Cynthia Weinrich. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cOverall, it\u2019s kind of hard to say\u201d whether the tournament has helped or hurt the bakery, Weinrich said. At the shop, she added, it\u2019s largely felt like a regular, post-Mother\u2019s Day week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Other entrepreneurs have pivoted in light of the PGA Championship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Nicholas Sebastian Salon &amp; Spa closed for four days because of the projected traffic from the tournament. But owner Nick Scamuffa took advantage of his salon\u2019s expansive parking lot, which is just a few-minute walk to a spectator entrance, and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/consumer\/pga-championship-aronimink-parking-lots-homeowners-profit-20260514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/consumer\/pga-championship-aronimink-parking-lots-homeowners-profit-20260514.html\">sold spots for between $150 and $200 a day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On Sunday afternoon, he said he was on track to have parked 322 cars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Scamuffa said he would have made more money being open, but the extra earnings will help offset the approximately 800 appointments the salon missed out on over four days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s not the PGA\u2019s fault,\u201d Scamuffa said. \u201cThey\u2019re just doing their thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Scamuffa said he can\u2019t help but laugh, too, at all the publicity his salon has gotten over a parking lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Even Lemme, of Luigi and Giovanni, said he doesn\u2019t know that the temporary business disruptions could have been prevented. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI respect what they do,\u201d Lemme said of the PGA.
