{"id":650411,"date":"2026-05-18T13:52:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/650411\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T13:52:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:52:21","slug":"what-this-ivy-league-is-doing-to-get-students-hired-in-the-age-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/650411\/","title":{"rendered":"What this Ivy League is doing to get students hired in the age of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dartmouth College<\/p>\n<p>Cheryl Senter\/Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Fears that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> will upend students&#8217; future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/careers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">career plans<\/a> are reverberating across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/colleges-universities\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">college campuses<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Higher education needs to do better,&#8221; said Joseph Catrino, the inaugural director of Dartmouth&#8217;s Center for Career Design. &#8220;We need to do better for our students \u2014 we need to step up and help students be prepared.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Ivy League college recently raised\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.dartmouth.edu\/news\/2026\/01\/dartmouth-raises-30-million-offer-internships-all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$30 million in endowed funds to support internship opportunities<\/a>. Now students can access up to $6,500 during any term to help finance unpaid or underpaid internships. &#8220;This allows the student to explore and engage in a field that they normally wouldn&#8217;t be able to,&#8221; Catrino said.<\/p>\n<p>Many other colleges and universities are launching similar initiatives to make students more employable amid a rapidly changing labor market. Additional internships, externships and hands-on work, these schools say, could better position their students to land jobs after graduating.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates of Baruch College participate in a commencement ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, June 5, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Bebeto Matthews | AP<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the City University of New York kicked off a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuny.edu\/about\/administration\/offices\/ocip\/cuny-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sweeping effort<\/a>\u00a0to improve career outcomes for its 180,000 undergraduates by integrating career-connected advising, paid internships, apprenticeships and collaborations with industry specialists across every academic concentration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Success depends on our ability to change and adapt,&#8221; said CUNY&#8217;s chancellor, F\u00e9lix Matos Rodr\u00edguez, in a statement about the announcement. &#8220;It&#8217;s not enough for students to graduate with a degree &#8230; they must leave with direction, preparation, experience and connections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/ai-effect\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The AI effect<\/a> puts immense pressure on schools to address students&#8217; concerns about the labor market at a time when many people were already questioning higher ed&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/07\/college-investment.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return on investment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have to be on it, and we have to be nimble and quick,&#8221; Catrino said. &#8220;Higher education has a big task at hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of students are pessimistic about the job market, and 4 in 10 students have considered changing their field of study due to AI, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/curiosity\/cnbc-ai-work-survey-may-2026\/?utm_source=cnbc_2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNBC and SurveyMonkey Quarterly AI and Jobs Survey<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Roughly 36% have considered changing their target industry, and 49% have considered changing the skills they are focused on developing, the survey found. In April, the firms polled about 3,600 people, including nearly 800 students in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>While the percentage of students changing majors is substantial now, it will likely be even higher in the coming years, according to Eric Greenberg, president of Greenberg Educational Group, a New York-based consulting firm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What particularly complicates choosing a major now is the unpredictability regarding which majors will be most and least impacted by AI, which can, of course, dramatically change job prospects,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/09\/47percent-of-college-students-have-seriously-considered-changing-majors-due-to-ai-survey.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent reports<\/a> also show students are scrambling to switch majors, largely due to concerns about AI&#8217;s impact on the job market and their employment prospects.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Where the jobs aren&#8217;t<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of noise,&#8221; Dartmouth&#8217;s Catrino said, referring to a recent slate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/27\/block-mass-layoffs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">large-scale layoff announcements<\/a> and reduced entry-level job openings, which some experts said could be the start of an AI-driven\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/27\/are-dorseys-giant-job-cuts-the-start-of-an-ai-jobs-apocalypse-economists-weigh-in.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jobs apocalypse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, some industries are more prone to disruptions than others.
