The ’80s were full of sci-fi stories that imagined an otherworldly future, whether lawless, as seen in Escape from New York, or desolate apocalypses, as seen in The Road Warrior. Ridley Scott, however, put a different spin on the future when he adapted Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner<\/a> delivered skyscraper-sized neon lights on rain-soaked city streets, and while the movie didn’t immediately captivate audiences, it has since garnered a cult following, thanks in no small part to its aesthetic. <\/p>\n

Originally released in 1982, the movie received a follow-up 35 years later in the form of Blade Runner 2049<\/a>, produced by Scott and directed by Denis Villeneuve. Unfortunately, the box office performance of that sequel ultimately stalled plans for more projects in the Blade Runner universe. Now, 44 years after the original movie, two more projects in the world of Blade Runner are being released.<\/p>\n

The first new project is described as a “multisensory experience” set in the world of Blade Runner, being developed by Behaviour and PHI Studios, based in Quebec. The augmented virtual reality experience is due for release in 2027<\/a>, and this announcement also included a much-needed update for another Blade Runner project. Prime Video’s original series Blade Runner 2099<\/a> is also slated to premiere in 2027, making it a long time coming since its initial announcement back in November 2021. Filming for the series had wrapped in 2024, though a release date had never been confirmed until now.<\/p>\n

Blade Runner 2099 won’t be the first television show set in the world of the film. Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which premiered in November 2021, was an adult-animated series on Adult Swim. Black Lotus, a co-production with Crunchyroll, was set before the events of Blade Runner 2049. However, it would receive mixed reviews for its stiff animation and storytelling. Black Lotus was the last Blade Runner project to be released for some time, making the news about Blade Runner 2099 all the more welcome, especially since the world originally created by Scott, Hampton Fancher, and David Peoples is so ripe for expansion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Given the title of the project, it’s safe to assume that Blade Runner 2099 is set after the events of 2049, though it’s hard to tell how much of a connection the series will have to the films. The confirmed cast of the upcoming series includes Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold, and Lewis Gribben, though only one cast member is confirmed<\/a> to be playing a replicant.<\/p>\n

Yeoh’s character in the upcoming series is described as a replicant who is coming to terms with the end of her lifespan, while Schafer’s character is described as a “chameleon” who is on the run, trying to secure a stable future for her brother. The plot sounds unlike previous Blade Runner projects, and it will be exciting to see if Prime Video wants to make the project live beyond a limited series, or if it finds enough success on streaming in 2027 to justify more Blade Runner projects in the future. Whatever the case, Scott’s world of androids and bleak cyberpunk visuals is continuing to remain relevant.<\/p>\n
