{"id":650670,"date":"2026-05-18T16:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T16:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/650670\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T16:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T16:54:11","slug":"box-office-curry-barkers-obsession-posts-17-2m-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/650670\/","title":{"rendered":"Box Office: Curry Barker&#8217;s &#8216;Obsession&#8217; Posts $17.2M Opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFocus Features\/Blumhouse\u2019s $15M+ TIFF acquisition, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/obsession\/\" id=\"auto-tag_obsession\" data-tag=\"obsession\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Obsession<\/a>, continued to best its forecast, now with a $17.2M opening as of this morning in third place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHeading into the weekend, YouTube filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/curry-barker\/\" id=\"auto-tag_curry-barker\" data-tag=\"curry-barker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Curry Barker<\/a>\u2018s first big screen theatrical was eyed at $8M-$9M in a frame where Lionsgate\u2019s Michael popped back up to No. 1 for a second time with an estimated $26M third weekend, -31%, followed by 20th Century Studios\u2019 Devil Wears Prada 2 with around $17.8M, -57%, in second.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe other big pom pom wave for Obsession as we previously told you: this is a fantastic opening for a movie acquired out of a film festival. When was the last time we saw a box office opening for a movie that was acquired for $15M+?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tObsession\u2018s Sunday arrived in at $4.8M versus the $3.7M which was reported. As we previously told you, the romance horror movie earned an A- CinemaScore \u2014 extremely rare for a horror movie which typically averages between a B and a C on that pollster\u2019s scale. Read, Get Out earned an A-. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPLFs repped close to 40% of weekend ticket sales with a 39% turnout from those under 25. Also, the 25-34 set repped 39% of the crowd. Screen Engine\/Comscore\u2019s PostTrak showed a very good 70% definite recommend.\u00a0So, there\u2019s the catalysts for an even better weekend than imagined from Barker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tNext up for Barker, he\u2019s reteamed with Blumhouse and Focus Features for Anything But Ghosts which he\u2019ll also star in with Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard.
