\n\tEXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Television<\/a> is entering a new era in unscripted programming after acquiring a majority stake in Vanderpump Rules<\/a> and The Valley<\/a> producer 32 Flavors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company, which was founded by and run by Alex Baskin, was established in 2023 <\/a>after he exited Amazon-owned Evolution Media, where he was previously President. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe deal has been in the works for a number of months and Deadline understands that it recently closed. The move was slightly complicated by the fact that Sony\u2019s unscripted bosses Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman, who founded The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), exited the business earlier this year, <\/a>as revealed by Deadline.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat move put Sony\u2019s unscripted business \u2013 Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction \u2013 under the purview of Sony Pictures Television Studios President Katherine Pope, who said 32 Flavors was \u201cbuilt on a clear creative vision\u201d.<\/p>\n

\n\tBaskin is widely considered one of the rising reality producers, making some of the buzziest non-scripted shows such as Bravo\u2019s Vanderpump Rules,\u00a0The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/a>,\u00a0The Real Housewives of Orange County, and The Valley, as well as its recent spinoff\u00a0The Valley: Persian Style.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company is also producing Still Flipping Out\u00a0for Bravo with Jeff Lewis<\/a> and has come on board the second season of Hulu\u2019s Love Thy Nader.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tBaskin just landed a greenlight for a Vanderpump Rules spinoff from Lisa Vanderpump<\/a>, set in Las Vegas, with the hope of picking back up with the new cast of the SUR-based reality series after that.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe has also moved into true-crime with podcast Once Upon A Con and makes Netflix video podcast Shut Up Evan.<\/p>\n

\n\tBaskin recently spoke at Deadline\u2019s Reality TV Summit. He noted that character-based reality shows, rather than celebrity docu-follows, are having a moment. \u201cCeleb shows have an obvious appeal, and they\u2019re easy to market. But the challenge that we found is celebrities are not always open, and so I think the audience is tired of that, and if they don\u2019t think that they\u2019re getting more from celebrities in a long-form series than they\u2019re getting from them on social media or wherever, they\u2019re just not tuning in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe joked that 32 Flavors produces shows for all cycles of someone\u2019s life. \u201cWhen you come to LA and you are attractive enough and you need to earn a living, then you start at Sur, and you\u2019re on Vanderpump Rules. Then I think that you may either move to the Valley, in which case you\u2019re on The Valley, or if you\u2019re Persian and you move to the valley, well, that\u2019s another show. Or a little bit later in life, you\u2019re a Real Housewife of Beverly Hills. If things go wrong, then we put you on Botched,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn March, Holzman and Saidman left the studio and taking their IPC banner, which makes A&E\u2019s\u00a0Leah Remini: Scientology & the Aftermath,\u00a0Netflix\u2019s\u00a0With Love, Meghan\u00a0and Bravo\u2019s\u00a0Surviving\u00a0Mormonism with them.<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere, Sony operates 19 Entertainment, which is involved in\u00a0Idol\u00a0and\u00a0So You Think You Can Dance; 90 Day Fianc\u00e9\u00a0producer Sharp Entertainment; Rhett Bachner and Brien Meagher\u2019s B17, which produced series such as\u00a0Extracted\u00a0for Fox; This Machine, which was founded by\u00a0The War Room\u00a0producer R.J Cutler; and Maxine Productions, the company behind true-crime hits such as ID\u2019s\u00a0Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV\u00a0and\u00a0The Fall of Diddy.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company also has a successful game show division, which is led by President Suzanne Prete and produces long-running series such as\u00a0Wheel of Fortune\u00a0and\u00a0Jeopardy!. It reports directly to Sony Pictures Television Chairman Keith LeGoy.<\/p>\n

\n\tBaskin will remain CEO of the company as it moves under Sony.<\/p>\n
