The rape of Europa, by Titian<\/p>\n

On Sunday I argued<\/a> against the widespread depiction of Europe\u2019s economy as moribund because its productivity growth has lagged America\u2019s. The productivity numbers aren\u2019t wrong, exactly, but they are misleading: America\u2019s faster growth reflects its dominance of a narrow sector, IT, and has not translated into lagging European productivity measured in terms of the value of the goods an hour\u2019s labor can produce.<\/p>\n

In laying out this argument I relied on data from the World Bank. As some economists pointed out to me, however, estimates from the International Monetary Fund look somewhat different. This is odd, and I\u2019ll look into the discrepancy.<\/p>\n

I am, however, fairly sure that the picture I derived from World Bank data is right, partly because the story fits together, but also because it turns out that a third source, the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development \u2014 which is good for many kinds of data! \u2014 has estimates of exactly the variables I\u2019ve been talking about. Namely, productivity per hour at constant prices, which is what the misleading numbers focus on, and PPP in current prices, which is actually the relevant variable.<\/p>\n

The source is the OECD Data Explorer<\/a>. Here\u2019s productivity in the euro area relative to productivity in the US, at constant and current prices:<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the same story I told yesterday: European relative decline if you use constant prices, no trend using current prices.<\/p>\n

Again, I am not saying that all is well with Europe.
