North Carolina coach Bill Belichick could use some good P.R. There\u2019s no better way to get it than to appear on a wildly popular podcast and, in so doing, attempt to come off as almost human.<\/p>\n
He largely accomplished that in his visit with Pardon My Take, even if \u2014 as Carmine Lupertazzi once said \u2014 a Don never wears shorts.<\/p>\n
During the extended interview, the issue of Belichick\u2019s \u201cno days off\u201d motto came up. After all these years, Belichick explained that it doesn\u2019t reflect a maniacal mandate to working every single day but a commitment to working hard on work days.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost people don\u2019t really understand what that means \u2014 or what it meant to us, I should say \u2014 what it meant to us,\u201d Belichick said. \u201cWhat it meant to us was, when you come to work, you go to work. You don\u2019t come to work and dillydally around and like, \u2018I was here, I broke a sweat, I showed up,\u2019 and go home. That\u2019s a day off.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we said, \u2018no days off,\u2019 we meant, \u2018You come to work, you\u2019re ready to work, you\u2019re prepared, you put in a good day\u2019s work,\u2019 OK? Maybe tomorrow\u2019s an off day. . . . That\u2019s fine. I\u2019m not saying like, \u2018Don\u2019t take a day off.\u2019 We\u2019re saying, \u2018Don\u2019t come to the stadium and take a day off.\u2019 And so the \u2018no days off\u2019 was when you come in here, man, we expect your best and we expect you to work at it. When we\u2019re done, we\u2019re done, and, you know, you\u2019re with your family or you\u2019re, you know, whatever you\u2019re doing. Sure, there\u2019s days off. But don\u2019t take them here.\u201d<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t viewed that way. As Belichick said, it became part of the \u201chype train of the Patriots.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019s sold towels and some, you know, beer mugs or whatever,\u201d Belichick said. \u201cAnd it was used in a different context.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a reasonable explanation. And, if it had been provided at the time, Belichick would have been perceived as less of a curmudgeon who lacks perspective or life balance and more as a guy spreading the very positive message of being fully engaged in your work, on your work days.<\/p>\n
That said, the rule only applied to the players.
