The backlash against this type of embryonic selection has called it a kind of eugenics 2.0, or \u201cliberal eugenics\u201d by some of the technology\u2019s opponents.  A new company, named Herasight, claims in a new white paper that it can create polygenic scores more accurate than its competition, but whether that\u2019s a good thing or a bad things remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Unlocking the mysteries of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a39610385\/entire-human-genome-officially-published\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a39610385\/entire-human-genome-officially-published\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"human genome\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">human genome<\/a> and understanding the genetic realities that underpin our existence has provided powerful tools for scientists and physicians. With this knowledge, they\u2019ve been able to do things like develop new types of gene therapies, intended to alleviate some of the very worst diseases that afflict humanity. With that power now in the hands of startups, however, things are going off the rails into scientific territories best consigned to history. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">In recent years, a plethora of start-ups like Orchid, Nucleus Genomics, and Heliospect Genomics have been trying to turn embryonic selection into a business model by essentially ranking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a35876748\/scientists-grow-mouse-embryo-outside-womb-are-humans-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a35876748\/scientists-grow-mouse-embryo-outside-womb-are-humans-next\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"embryos\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">embryos<\/a>\u2014screening them for certain diseases, mental illnesses, and even IQ. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/genetics-group-slams-company-using-its-data-screen-embryos-genomes\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/genetics-group-slams-company-using-its-data-screen-embryos-genomes\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Every\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Every<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/06\/06\/genetics-testing-startup-nucleus-genomics-criticized-for-its-embryo-product-makes-me-so-nauseous\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/06\/06\/genetics-testing-startup-nucleus-genomics-criticized-for-its-embryo-product-makes-me-so-nauseous\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"single\" data-node-id=\"4.5\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">single<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/oct\/18\/us-startup-charging-couples-to-screen-embryos-for-iq\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/oct\/18\/us-startup-charging-couples-to-screen-embryos-for-iq\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"one\" data-node-id=\"4.7\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one<\/a> of these companies has faced backlash for their controversial efforts\u2014which have been referred to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2017\/11\/01\/105176\/eugenics-20-were-at-the-dawn-of-choosing-embryos-by-health-height-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2017\/11\/01\/105176\/eugenics-20-were-at-the-dawn-of-choosing-embryos-by-health-height-and-more\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"eugenics 2.0\" data-node-id=\"4.9\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eugenics 2.0<\/a>\u201d\u2014but they seem to just keep coming. <\/p>\n<p>Related Story<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Last week, the latest entrant into this embryonic scrum\u2014a company called Herasight\u2014came out of \u201cstealth mode\u201d with a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EpFi160I1t11RWYFe1_uJZ0ixP4WL-Na\/view\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EpFi160I1t11RWYFe1_uJZ0ixP4WL-Na\/view\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"white paper\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"d7bd331c-d9a8-4420-94fd-8b9ff9696e6a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" data-href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EpFi160I1t11RWYFe1_uJZ0ixP4WL-Na\/view\" data-product-url=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1EpFi160I1t11RWYFe1_uJZ0ixP4WL-Na\/view\" data-affiliate=\"false\" data-affiliate-network=\"\" data-vars-ga-product-price=\"$0.00\" data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=\"cb05ea6a-f02c-4667-a6dd-897d63a6a8ba\" data-vars-ga-link-treatment=\"(not set) | (not set)\" class=\"body-link product-links css-1kk1geb e1aq0z090\" data->white paper<\/a> detailing how their embryonic tool can screen for the likelihood of 17 diseases (known as a polygenic score) developing within an embryo, effectively giving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a65462165\/babies-with-three-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a65462165\/babies-with-three-parents\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"parents\" data-node-id=\"7.3\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">parents<\/a> the opportunity to select the \u201chealthiest\u201d one of the bunch. The company also asserts that it can do this better than the current rogue\u2019s gallery that comprises its technological competition. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Herasight\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexTISYoung\/status\/1950575617294180510\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexTISYoung\/status\/1950575617294180510\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"announcement post on X\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow\">announcement post on X<\/a> (formerly Twitter) also showed a widget displaying predicted embryonic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/math\/a43862561\/why-iq-testing-is-biased\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/math\/a43862561\/why-iq-testing-is-biased\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"IQs\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IQs<\/a>\u2014a method that isn\u2019t explained  in the accompanying white paper\u2014which left a few experts scratching their heads. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cI&#8217;m curious about the decision to roll out the widget without making the research behind it available,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SashaGusevPosts\/status\/1950681184972701905\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SashaGusevPosts\/status\/1950681184972701905\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"tweeted Sasha Gusev\" data-node-id=\"9.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweeted Sasha Gusev<\/a>, a statistical geneticist at Harvard Medical School. \u201cThe goal is to use eugenics backlash to generate a hype cycle and raise more money (while maintaining plausible deniability), yes?\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">(A co-author of the paper, UCLA geneticist <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexTISYoung\/status\/1950687573275521388\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlexTISYoung\/status\/1950687573275521388\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Alex Strudwick Young\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alex Strudwick Young<\/a>, said that details of the IQ predictor will be released in a future white paper.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">All of this is an example of what is called Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Polygenic risk (PGT-P), a process that costs thousands of dollars on top of typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a62414538\/human-life-pause-button\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a62414538\/human-life-pause-button\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"IVF\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IVF<\/a> costs. A <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1525083&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41431-023-01372-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41431-023-01372-2\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"2023 study in the journal Nature\" data-vars-ga-product-id=\"ec96e098-6f85-4bbe-9ffe-e66dbced3dbf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41431-023-01372-2\" data-product-url=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41431-023-01372-2\" data-affiliate=\"true\" data-affiliate-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1525083&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41431-023-01372-2\" data-affiliate-network=\"{&quot;afflink_redirect&quot;:&quot;\/_p\/afflink\/x2f5\/nature-contributing-to-the-on-going-debate&quot;,&quot;site_id&quot;:&quot;a4f9566a-1fd0-484c-b731-150b9bda9ffa&quot;,&quot;network&quot;:{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Skimlinks&quot;}}\" data-vars-ga-product-price=\"$0.00\" data-vars-ga-product-retailer-id=\"f801a338-0b7b-48db-ae54-393a3d1a2522\" data-vars-ga-link-treatment=\"(not set) | (not set)\" class=\"body-link product-links css-1kk1geb e1aq0z090\">2023 study in the journal Nature<\/a> found that these services are \u201cnot sufficiently effective or robust for embryo selection,\u201d and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (a U.K. regulator) echoed that sentiment, the stating that PGT-P \u201cdoes not meet the criteria for genetic testing and is currently not backed by evidence from scientific studies.\u201d according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/fertility-agencies-promoting-eugenics-with-embryo-selection\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/fertility-agencies-promoting-eugenics-with-embryo-selection\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"to The Telegraph\" data-node-id=\"11.7\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to The Telegraph<\/a>. This comes as less of a surprise than some may assume, as the U.S. is basically an embryology wild west and contains virtually no regulations against preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which some see traipsing into the same moral quagmire as eugenics. <\/p>\n<p>Related Story<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Of course, the word \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a30183673\/dating-app-genetics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a30183673\/dating-app-genetics\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"eugenics\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eugenics<\/a>\u201d conjures up images from some of the darkest pages of human history, as it provided the false scientific basis for some of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century. In 1998, New Zealand ethicist Nicholas Agar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/40441188\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/40441188\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"wrote an article\" data-node-id=\"13.5\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote an article<\/a> (and subsequent books) on \u201cliberal eugenics\u201d\u2014the idea that parents should have the right to genetically improve their children\u2014and this is a definition that at least one member of Herasight ardently stands by. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">\u201cWhere I have engaged in academic discussion and debate among fellow philosophers regarding \u2018liberal eugenics\u2019[&#8230;] my position is that decisions related to reproduction should be left to individual parents, not the state,\u201d Jonathan Anomaly, a co-author on the Herasight white paper, told <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.hopenothate.org.uk\/superbaby-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/investigations.hopenothate.org.uk\/superbaby-factory\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Hope Not Hate\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hope Not Hate<\/a>, a U.K.-based investigative group last year after accusations of participating in \u201crace science\u201d via their writings and research. Three other authors on the white paper are also discussed in the Hope Not Hate investigative report, and the accusations are similarly troubling.  \u201cMy main paper on this subject does not discuss race at all and is clear that while IQ correlates with good social outcomes, it is neither the only factor that matters nor is it an indication of moral worth.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">It\u2019s no secret that the genetic power to predict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a26454634\/disease-detectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a26454634\/disease-detectives\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"disease\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-1kk1geb emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disease<\/a> and other attributes in an embryo is incredible, but it\u2019s one best treated with respect, rather than as a way to pad a bottom line.<br data-node-id=\"15.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/e9b7a87b-359a-4fff-859b-ab9cf5e31c5b_1565789938.file\" alt=\"Headshot of Darren Orf\" title=\"Headshot of Darren Orf\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"css-o0wq4v ev8dhu53\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Darren lives in Portland, has a cat, and writes\/edits about sci-fi and how our world works.
