{"id":652496,"date":"2026-05-19T14:27:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/652496\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T14:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T14:27:13","slug":"aid-cuts-and-war-complicate-ebola-response-in-congo-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/652496\/","title":{"rendered":"Aid cuts and war complicate Ebola response in Congo \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are \u201cat least 395 suspected cases\u201d across the two countries, and \u201cmore than 100 people\u201d have died, Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said.<\/p>\n<p>But the real figures are likely much higher: A high rate of positive samples and increasing clusters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/17-05-2026-epidemic-of-ebola-disease-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-and-uganda-determined-a-public-health-emergency-of-international-concern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">point to<\/a>\u00a0a potentially\u00a0much larger outbreak than currently detected, the WHO warned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health officials are also faced with a lack of vaccines or effective treatments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my biggest worry because we need to see how to stop the transmission,\u201d Kaseya told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/live\/c99l70zy1j7t#player\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC<\/a>, adding that Africa CDC was working with authorities in both countries to contain the spread.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Serwanga, a Uganda-based Ebola expert at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said the Bundibugyo strain driving the outbreak was \u201cvery serious,\u201d with a fatality rate of between 30 and 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have any vaccines, doesn\u2019t have any treatments,\u201d Serwanga, who is also principal research scientist at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, said.
