\n\tThe reviews are rolling in for latest Star Wars installment The Mandalorian and Grogu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSet shortly after the 2019-\u201923 Disney+ series,\u00a0the movie follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his apprentice Grogu as the New Republic enlists them to rescue Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White) in exchange for information on a target. Sigourney Weaver also stars.<\/p>\n

\n\tJon Favreau directs the Disney\/Lucasfilm film, which releases globally May 22. Produced by Lucasfilm, the film is written by Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Noah Kloor.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe early critical reaction is underwhelming (after the early fan and influencer social reaction inevitably skewed positive) with the film garnering 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from 50 reviews.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline\u2019s Damon Wise described the film as \u201cpretty entertaining when it\u2019s at its simplest\u201d, but echoed many critics today in viewing the franchise as one that is lost and in need of a way back to base.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe writes: \u201cAt the end of the day,\u00a0TM&G\u00a0is what it is, and the fanbase will show up for it, much like they did last time. But for how much longer? The same fans are tired of being in the limbo between the original films and the prequels, and they want to see more of the minor characters than the usual suspects (when you break it down,\u00a0TM&G\u00a0is basically\u00a0The Wonder Years\u00a0version of Bobba Fett, Jabba the Hutt and Yoda). But is the younger audience going to stay with the franchise when they\u2019re old enough to choose movies of their own? Next year, the original\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0turns 50 \u2014 and it\u2019s showing its age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIGN wrote of the film: \u201cThis is not the way\u2026It feels inevitable that, in the years to come, the popular criticism of The Mandalorian and Grogu will be that it just feels like either a truncated season of the TV show or a too-long episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDen Of Geek was also dispirited: \u201cThe Mandalorian and Grogu\u00a0isn\u2019t a bad film, per se, it\u2019s just a disappointingly average one set in a universe that once inspired awe\u2026 Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu might be the first summer tentpole blockbuster that feels like a small screen rerun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGizmodo was also left cold: \u201cWith\u00a0The Mandalorian and Grogu, co-writer and director Jon Favreau aimed to make a\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0movie someone could watch cold. Something a person could enjoy\u00a0without needing to watch three seasons\u00a0of the TV show it\u2019s based on before seeing the movie. It\u2019s a good thought, one inspired by\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0creator George Lucas himself, who famously dropped fans into\u00a0Episode IV\u00a0of a larger story. What Favreau neglected to do, though, is what Lucas later did with the prequel trilogy. He neglected to make a\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0movie for people who\u00a0had\u00a0watched the show. For people who\u00a0have\u00a0followed the franchise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Verge says a similar thing: \u201cThe Mandalorian and Grogu should have been a season of TV\u2026.The new Star Wars movie isn\u2019t strong enough to get the franchise back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEmpire gives the film 3\/5 stars, noting: \u201cOddly, it feels like the least consequential Mandalorian chapter yet, with\u00a0previous\u00a0episodes from the TV incarnation \u2014 or even segments of the much-maligned Book Of Boba Fett \u2014 having more impact on the narrative.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0thinner than skimmed blue milk\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Guardian also gave the film 3\/5 stars calling it a \u201cdecent outing\u201d: \u201cThe badass bounty hunter and his little green friend take on the Empire and Jabba the Hutt\u2019s family in this solid enough addition to the ever-expanding universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIndieWire was another who said the movie more resembled a TV episode: \u201cThis supersized episode Is Star Wars at its most generic: inessential and inoffensive, frequently adorable and fun for the whole family, Jon Favreau\u2019s film feels like three good-enough TV episodes smushed together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Telegraph was more stinging: \u201cEven cute Baby Yoda can\u2019t save Pedro Pascal\u2019s hopeless Star Wars spin-off\u2026The Mandalorian and Grogu\u2019s absurd plot flops from one clumsily staged brawl to another \u2013 at least the puppetry and stop-motion are alright.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Independent was also damning: \u201cStick a fork in Star Wars. It\u2019s done\u2026With just five minutes of Pedro Pascal and a completely dispirited voice performance from Jeremy Allen White as Jabba the Hutt\u2019s son, this is the dullest and most inconsequential Star Wars ever made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPolygon was more of a fan, however, saying while the movie \u201cprobably shouldn\u2019t exist\u201d, the reviewer was \u201cglad it did\u201d: \u201cThe Mandalorian and Grogu isn\u2019t a Star Wars movie but it\u2019s still a damn good time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The reviews are rolling in for latest Star Wars installment The Mandalorian and Grogu.
