{"id":65287,"date":"2025-08-07T14:33:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T14:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/65287\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T14:33:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T14:33:08","slug":"most-americans-get-over-half-daily-calories-from-ultra-processed-foods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/65287\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Americans get over half daily calories from ultra-processed foods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A new federal report found the majority of Americans get more than half of their daily calories from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ultra-processed foods,<\/a> with burgers and sandwiches, sweet bakery products, savory snacks, pizza and sweetened beverages being among the top sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said between August 2021 and August 2023, American youth &#8220;consumed 61.9% of their daily calories, on average, from ultra-processed foods, while adults consumed 53.0% of their daily calories from ultra-processed foods.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultra-processed foods tend to be hyperpalatable, energy-dense, low in dietary fiber, and contain little or no whole foods, while having high amounts of salt, sweeteners, and unhealthy fats,&#8221; according to the CDC. &#8220;Ultra-processed food consumption has been associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health and Human Services Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rfk-jrs-highly-anticipated-maha-report-paints-dismal-state-child-health-national-security-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a> told Fox News earlier this year, &#8220;We are poisoning ourselves and it&#8217;s coming principally from these ultra-processed foods.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/5-everyday-foods-drinks-damaging-long-term-health-nutrition-experts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">5 EVERYDAY FOODS AND DRINKS SILENTLY DAMAGING YOUR LONG-TERM HEALTH, SAY NUTRITION EXPERTS<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/chips-in-store.jpg\" alt=\"Chips for sale in grocery store\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Potato chips are displayed at a store in New York, on March 25, 2021.\u00a0 (AP\/Mark Lennihan)<\/p>\n<p>The report said, &#8220;During August 2021\u2013August 2023, the mean percentage of total calories consumed from ultra-processed foods among those age 1 year and older was 55.0%.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Young children consumed fewer calories from ultra-processed foods than older kids, the report found. Adults 60 and older consumed fewer calories from those sources than younger adults. Low-income adults consumed more ultra-processed foods than those with higher incomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Consumption of ultra-processed foods also appeared to dip slightly over the past decade. (Alex Wong\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The top five sources of calories from ultra-processed foods among youth were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/experts-compare-nutritional-benefits-tacos-sliders-offer-healthy-prep-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sandwiches (including burgers),<\/a> which contributed 7.6% of total calories, followed by sweet bakery products (6.3%), savory snacks (4.9%), pizza (4.7%), and sweetened beverages (3.9%),&#8221; the report said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Similarly, the top five sources of calories from ultra-processed foods among adults were sandwiches (including burgers), which contributed 8.6% of total calories, followed by sweet bakery products (5.2%), sweetened beverages (4.4%), savory snacks (3.4%), and breads, rolls, and tortillas (3.1%),&#8221; it added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/soda-glasses.jpg\" alt=\"Two people holding and clinking glasses of sofa with straws and ice seen inside\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Sweetened beverages also were a top source of calories from ultra-processed foods, according to the CDC.
