The NAACP identified eight target states, and the major state universities in them, that the organization wants college athletes and fans to withhold athletic support<\/a> from in a recently launched campaign against states that altered voting rights for the Black voter block.<\/p>\n

Those states include: Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia. That would affect most of the SEC, including the Tennessee Volunteers<\/a>, LSU Tigers<\/a>, Alabama Crimson Tide<\/a>, Auburn Tigers<\/a>, Florida Gators<\/a>, Ole Miss Rebels<\/a>, Mississippi State Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks<\/a>, Texas Longhorns<\/a>, Texas A&M Aggies, and Georgia Bulldogs<\/a>, based on the NAACP\u2019s criteria.<\/p>\n

Per the NAACP\u2019s official statement<\/a>, \u201cThe NAACP today launched the \u2018Out of Bounds\u2019 campaign, a national call for Black athletes, families, fans, alumni, and consumers to withhold athletic and financial support from public universities in states that have moved to limit, weaken, or erase Black voting representation in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which gutted what was left of the Voting Rights Act. The NAACP identified eight priority states \u2014 Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia \u2014 and targeted flagship public athletic programs generating more than $100 million in annual revenue that continue to recruit Black athletes while their state governments dismantle the political power of Black communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The focus would be to redirect this interest to HBCUs within these states. With that said, there are schools in certain markets that aren\u2019t included in the NAACP\u2019s push.<\/p>\n

Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kentucky are not part of the NAACP\u2019s campaign<\/p>\n

Teams that wouldn\u2019t be affected by this include the Vanderbilt Commodores<\/a>, which are part of the SEC\u2019s only private university, plus the Arkansas Razorbacks, Oklahoma Sooners<\/a>, Missouri Tigers, and Kentucky Wildcats, which are all in states that weren\u2019t named in the NAACP’s “Out of Bounds” campaign.<\/p>\n
