\n\tCannes newbie Lola Petticrew<\/a> will get their moment in the sun when British filmmaker Clio Barnard<\/a>\u2019s powerfully resonant\u00a0I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning\u00a0has its premiere at the 58th Directors\u2019 Fortnight. Adapted by Enda Walsh from Keiran Goddard\u2019s stunning\u00a02024 novel about social and class inequality, the film charts the lives of five 30-year-old childhood friends. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to cope with adulthood and the pressures of the world,\u201d says Petticrew, \u201cand deal with the cards that they\u2019ve been dealt in being where they\u2019re from \u2014 and how the roads they\u2019ve taken have created a bit of conflict between them. They\u2019re the age that we are, and this was all the music we remember, but everything feels so present.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAs with Goddard\u2019s tome, Barnard\u2019s film is set in Birmingham, in the British Midlands. Petticrew, playing Shiv, joined cast mates Anthony Boyle<\/a>, Joe Cole, Daryl McCormack and Jay Lycurgo on location in the region, where, they said, \u201cpeople of that community are in the film. A lot of them are doing stuff like playing builders and the people that work in the bars, so we got to build a rapport with them. They really welcomed this weird little film crew that landed smack-bang in the middle of their town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPetticrew and Boyle play the parents of two young girls. Shiv looks after their kids while also caring for her bedridden mother, while Boyle\u2019s character, Patrick, rides his bike delivering fast food. They didn\u2019t require a chemistry test because, in real-life, the pair have known each other since they were both 11. \u201cIt\u2019s so crazy, because Anto and me are from the same area of West Belfast. While it\u2019s not in Birmingham, or even England, we\u2019re from areas that aren\u2019t too dissimilar.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPetticrew and Boyle previously played siblings in the BBC drama\u00a0Come Home, then they portrayed Irish Republican paramilitary operatives Dolours Price and Brendan Hughes in the sublime FX drama\u00a0Say Nothing. \u201cAnd now we\u2019re parents,\u201d laughs the actor, speaking from Rome\u2019s Cinecitt\u00e0 Studios where they and\u00a0Euphoria\u2019s\u00a0Toby Wallace are shooting Season 1 of\u00a0Assassin\u2019s Creed\u00a0for Netflix..<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the seriousness of the themes addressed in Barnard\u2019s film, the cast had some laughs when the day\u2019s filming was done. \u201cOh, there was major craic that we had,\u201d they say, using an Irish term for having some fun. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t be around those boys and around those people and not have major craic. They are honestly four of the funniest people I\u2019ve ever met.
