John Travolta<\/a> is speaking out about fan reactions to his surprise Cannes Film Festival appearance \u2014specifically, his new beret look.<\/p>\n

On May 15, the Grease<\/a> star, 72, premiered his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach<\/a>, at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in France. He brought his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta<\/a>, to the red carpet event, where he was also surprised with an honorary Palme d\u2019Or.<\/p>\n

For the premiere of his film, Travolta opted for a black suit, a white tie and undershirt, and a white beret. Meanwhile, Ella rocked a black velvet dress, accessorizing with silver earrings.<\/p>\n

Travolta wore another beret (this time a black one) during a photo call for Propeller One-Way Night Coach on May 16. And he didn\u2019t stop there. The Pulp Fiction<\/a> actor once again sported a beret during a May 19 appearance<\/a> on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon<\/a>, and during a May 20 interview<\/a> on Today.<\/p>\n

Naturally, many fans took notice of his sudden style switch-up on social media.<\/p>\n

Travolta broke his silence on the beret trend during a May 18 interview with CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m a director this time,’\u201d he explained. \u201c\u2019You\u2019re an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cSo I looked up pictures [from the] \u201920s, \u201930, \u201940s, \u201950s, 60\u2019s, and the old-school directors wore berets, and the glasses. And I thought, \u2018That\u2019s what I\u2019m doing. I\u2019m doing an homage to being a director, so I\u2019m going to play the part of being a director.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Travolta had a second reason for all the berets, explaining he\u2019ll be able to tell what the photos are from, years from now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look back, I\u2019ll know, \u2018Oh, that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, what was when I won the Palme d\u2019Or.\u2019 And I will have vividness of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Travolta echoed these sentiments on Wednesday\u2019s Today appearance \u2014 while also wearing a beret.<\/p>\n
