\n\tOn the eve of Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u2018s final Late Show, the host invited Bruce Springsteen to the stage for a fitting performance of his protest song, \u201cStreets of Minneapolis.\u201d Earlier this year, the musician and the\u00a0E Street Band<\/a>\u00a0live-debuted the track during their\u00a0politically charged Land of Hope and Dreams tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a way that felt bittersweet, Colbert announced, \u201cLadies and gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen.\u201d As his spotlight faded and focused on the singer, Springsteen made it clear why he was there for the late-night series penultimate episode. \u201cI\u2019m here in support tonight of Stephen, because you\u2019re the first guy in America who lost his show because we\u2019ve got a president who can\u2019t take a joke,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cAnd because Larry and David Ellison feel they need to kiss his ass to get what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added, \u201cStephen, these are small-minded people who got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about. This is for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe singer then launched into an emotional performance of \u201cStreets of Minneapolis,\u201d which was written in reaction to ICE\u2019s brutal immigration crackdown in the city, and the\u00a0killings of Renee Good<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Alex Pretti<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, CBS announced it was\u00a0cancelling\u00a0The Late Show<\/a>,\u00a0claiming the move was \u201cpurely a financial decision.\u201d It\u2019s been speculated that CBS\u2019s parent company Paramount pulled the plug to\u00a0curry favor<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a> \u2014 who Colbert frequently called out during his show \u2014 and the FCC to ensure a merger between Paramount and Skydance would go through. As Springsteen highlighted before his performance on Wednesday night, Paramount is helmed by David Ellison, the son of Larry Ellison, the billionaire founder of Oracle.<\/p>\n

\n\tA procession of stars have lined up for Colbert\u2019s closing weeks, with guests including Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and original host David Letterman, who returned to throw CBS property off the Ed Sullivan Theater roof<\/a>. Recent musical guests include David Byrne, the Strokes, Michael Stipe, Chris Stapleton, and Foo Fighters, who previously served as the final musical guest of Letterman\u2019s Late Show.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen speaking to\u00a0The New York Times<\/a>\u00a0last month, Colbert discussed his decision<\/a> to cover political topics and lean into current events, and how that often drew the ire of the Trump administration. \u201cComedians are anti-authoritarian by nature,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cAnd authoritarians are never going to like anybody to laugh at them. The number of newspeople who have said to me or Jon Stewart or any of the guys who do this, \u2018God, I wish I could say what you say on air.\u2019 And we can. I think that upsets them.
