For years, the tensioned chemistry between\u00a0Shaquille O’Neal<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Charles Barkley<\/a>\u00a0has powered the chaos of “Inside the NBA.” One harmless joke can spiral into shouting matches and hurled insults, and that’s how they entertained people for almost two decades.<\/p>\n

While that friction is sort of expected now, there was a time when volatility wasn’t even in the picture. One of those moments came during the 2001 Western Conference Finals when Shaq’s\u00a0Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>\u00a0faced the San Antonio Spurs<\/a>. Like a Loch Ness monster sighting, the two titans actually exchanged words of appreciation that felt oddly out of character.<\/p>\n

One good compliment deserves another<\/p>\n

At that point in the postseason, everything was going the Purple and Gold’s way. They were on the verge of losing their first playoff game in weeks, but they miraculously pulled off the victory, 88-81. O’Neal collected 19 points and 14 rebounds, while\u00a0Kobe Bryant<\/a>\u00a0delivered 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists.<\/p>\n

The Big Diesel later joined the TNT crew to share his thoughts after the game, and it turned into an impromptu everything. The 2000 MVP described the Lakers’ resilience by drawing a Barkley comparison, then joked with Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Ernie Johnson as if he always belonged there.<\/p>\n

“Our goal was to come here and get one or two, and now we got two,”\u00a0O’Neal\u00a0said<\/a>.\u00a0“We just played through a lot of adversity tonight. We just played strong, and we had the Charles Barkley mentality.”<\/p>\n

Asked if that was a good or a bad assessment, Shaq doubled down.<\/p>\n

“That’s excellent. Charles Barkley is one of the greatest forwards to ever play the game. Period, point blank, no questions asked,”\u00a0stated the Lakers center.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, O’Neal had already coined the term a couple of seasons before Bryant came up with “Mamba Mentality.”\u00a0It just proves that the Diesel was way ahead of the curve in marketing, and he is a natural at these kinds of things.<\/p>\n

But just before O’Neal could utter another word, Barkley made sure to fire compliments his way.<\/p>\n

“Hey, man, I just wanna tell you. I’m impressed, obviously with you, Kobe, and the entire team. The role players have played terrific. I’ve been saying this for the last six months: If somebody in the world thinks somebody’s gonna beat y’all four times in a week, they’re nuts.\u00a0Y’all\u00a0got a great team and just keep it going because as a basketball fan, it’s great to watch,”\u00a0Sir Charles stated.<\/p>\n

Shaq and Chuck’s ever-colorful dynamic<\/p>\n

As two of the biggest names in the league in the 90s, O’Neal and Barkley’s paths have crossed multiple times. In fact, they played together for the gold-medal-winning U.S. Men’s National Basketball Team in 1996.<\/p>\n

But apparently, familiarity never quite settled into friendship the way it does for some former teammates. In 1999, the pair failed to smooth over their competitive edges and engaged in a fight that had Shaq throwing a left hook at Charles and Charles taking down Shaq with a double leg. It resulted in five-figure fines and multiple suspended games.<\/p>\n

Their moms eventually\u00a0got involved<\/a>\u00a0and urged the big men to settle their differences that night. They laughed it off and made amends to the point that Chuck wanted Shaq over to his house to break bread that same evening.<\/p>\n

“You know what’s crazy about the whole thing? That same night, Charles invited me to his house for dinner,”\u00a0O’Neal revealed.<\/p>\n

Shaquille declined the invite, but Charles made it clear that the proposition still stood.<\/p>\n

“You know what? You’re welcome any time,”\u00a0the Chuckster quipped.<\/p>\n

That dinner invitation was the perfect metaphor for everything O’Neal and Barkley have been to each other. Both are warm enough to extend an olive branch, but stubborn enough not to fully grasp it. Their relationship has always operated on that knife’s edge, swinging between complete animosity and genuine affection with little warning.<\/p>\n

All of that unpredictable dynamic was in full display since Shaq sat at the same Inside the NBA table with Barkley and the rest of the guys. It was like both NBA greats just found another arena to fight in, with a live audience and no referees to call technical fouls. It could get loud and messy at times, but that all came with the territory when O’Neal and Barkley were in the same room.<\/p>\n
