A formal vote by the wetlands commission, which could come as soon as its June 22 meeting, would clear the way for the church to seek final approval with Bethel’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

“We are committed to being thoughtful and respectful as we move forward. We don’t want to disrupt. We want to contribute,” said Bruno Lourenço, pastor of the church, during a public hearing in April. “I do want this facility to be a beacon of light and support for our families in town.”

An engineer working for the church told the wetlands commission during a public hearing on Monday that the church was responding to the town’s ecological requests for the 4-acre site, including provisions for butterflies and box turtles.

“We added two butterfly gardens at the south end of the building (where) … the southern exposure would be perfect for them,” said Thomas Nelson. “And during a six-week period in May and June, a qualified individual would be required to monitor the site on a daily basis” for box turtles.

Beth Cavagna, the town’s former planning director who serves as Bethel’s interim wetlands agent, said the church had also checked the important water quality boxes.

“This is one of those applications where you are going from no water quality treatment and no stormwater management into a highly sensitive area, and now you (are going to) have a complete updated system,” Cavagna said at the Monday hearing. “I am very pleased to see the changes that were made.”

Plans by the church represent the first phase of a larger vision.

“The second phase will be establishing a Christian school,” Lourenço said during an interview in April. “Once we pay off phase one, phase two is building a second floor for the classrooms.”

Current plans call for gym include bleacher space, locker rooms, and a kitchen. The parking lot would expand from 63 spaces to 115 spaces.

The pastor stressed during the April public hearing that the new gym and ministry center was being built because “we want to serve the community even more.”

“This facility will allow us to extend services to the community, offering different activities and initiatives,” the pastor said. “I envision this place to be a community-focused location.”

BETHEL – The town’s environmental watchdogs signaled their support for a $1.7 million building project that would triple…

[62
337,97,253575
post-656892","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fitness","tag-fitness","tag-health","tag-news-times
["GET
