A new Olivia Rodrigo single? Say less. When Rodrigo announced that she\u2019d be releasing her second single from her forthcoming album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love<\/a> on Friday, her dedicated fandom erupted with excitement. Rodrigo called the upcoming release, titled \u201cThe Cure,\u201d her favorite song on the album and one of her favorite songs she\u2019s ever made.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old pop star made the initial announcement on Tuesday, when she posted a photo of the single\u2019s artwork on Instagram: a Polaroid of Rodrigo holding some red string in a cat\u2019s cradle kind of way<\/a>, aptly spelling out the song\u2019s title.<\/p>\n

But Rodrigo didn\u2019t stop there<\/a>. She continued teasing the forthcoming single, this time with a snippet of the music video that is also set to drop. In the clip shared on Wednesday, women in nurse uniforms and chunky white heels are seen making their way toward powdery pink doors that read \u201cOR\u201d in her now signature curly-girl font. Rodrigo, with her tussled, dark-brown locks, looks to be leading the charge toward the operating room.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s the single even about? Are there any clues in the Polaroid Rodrigo shared? And what, if any, is the Cure frontman Robert Smith\u2019s role in all of this? Yahoo is breaking down everything Rodrigo\u2019s fandom knows \u2014 and is speculating about \u2014 ahead of \u201cThe Cure\u201d release. Let\u2019s drop in\u2026<\/p>\n

Robert Smith\u2019s influence<\/p>\n

Rodrigo has made her admiration for the Cure and its frontman, Robert Smith, well known. She described the frontman as \u201cperhaps the best songwriter to come out of England\u201d and \u201ca personal hero\u201d of hers<\/a> \u2014 before bringing him out as a surprise guest during her headlining Glastonbury set last June. The duo \u2014 who charmingly strummed their guitars and alternated verses on not one but two timeless tracks by the Cure: \u201cFriday I\u2019m in Love\u201d and \u201cJust Like Heaven<\/a>\u201d \u2014 have since maintained a sweet friendship.<\/p>\n

Smith told British Vogue for Rodrigo\u2019s April cover story<\/a>: \u201cShe calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion \u2014 and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together. \u2026 I can\u2019t wait to hear what she does next!\u201d<\/p>\n

How does this all relate to Rodrigo\u2019s upcoming single? Well, the song\u2019s title has some fans speculating that Smith himself may have been involved in producing the track<\/a>. After all, Smith said he\u2019d spent time in the studio with Rodrigo \u2014 and Rodrigo name-dropped \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d in her song, \u201cdrop dead<\/a>,\u201d the leading single off her new album: \u201cYou know all the words to \u2018Just Like Heaven,\u2019\u201d she sings, \u201cand I know why he wrote them now that you\u2019re standing right here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Could one of those studio sessions have been devoted to writing and recording \u201cThe Cure\u201d? It\u2019s not impossible! And is it just a coincidence that Rodrigo plans to release a track titled \u201cThe Cure\u201d on a Friday? (See the Cure\u2019s song, \u201cFriday I\u2019m In Love.\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Well, it actually is. During an appearance on iHeartRadio\u2019s Elvis Duran Show<\/a> on Thursday, Rodrigo said that \u201cThe Cure\u201d has actually nothing to do with the band: \u201cIt just was a happy coincidence, I suppose.\u201d e<\/p>\n

Nods to Red String Theory<\/p>\n

Another choice that is definitely not a coincidence: The use of red string in Rodrigo\u2019s artwork for \u201cThe Cure.\u201d In an interview with Cosmopolitan last month, Rodrigo coyly confirmed that \u201cthe string is important in the themes of the album<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Red String Theory<\/a>, also known as the Red Thread of Fate<\/a>, is a belief drawn from East Asian mythology that says people destined to be in each other\u2019s lives are connected by an invisible red string. It\u2019s the idea that regardless of time, circumstance or place, if you\u2019re meant to meet, you will.<\/p>\n

One fan on X speculated about Rodrigo\u2019s track<\/a>, \u201cInstead of the typical invisible red string that you have with your lover, she is the only one that\u2019s holding it. She now realizes that love can\u2019t fix you unless you yourself are \u2018the cure.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans can probably count on at least some yearning on the track, as Rodrigo recently told Audacy Music<\/a>, \u201cI realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them.\u201d<\/p>\n

An update to the pink wall<\/p>\n

Rodrigo\u2019s now famed mural in Los Angeles also got a facelift! While the main, concrete wall still reads, \u201cyou seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,\u201d it appears to have been repainted in a red, curly font resembling a stitch pattern. Additional lyrics surrounding the main mural have also popped up nearby, including the lyrics \u201cwhy can\u2019t you come stitch me up?\u201d and \u201cit\u2019ll never be the cure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI KNEW IT I KNEW THIS HAD TO BE RELATED TO THE RED STRING THEORY,\u201d one fan wrote of the new mural<\/a>. Another added, \u201cWE ARE NOT READY FOR THIS.\u201d<\/p>\n

Online, fans also think that all signs point to \u201cThe Cure\u201d being the final song on you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. This belief stems from something journalist Amel Mukhtar wrote in the British Vogue cover story<\/a> she penned after interviewing Rodrigo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe final song is about that realization: Love won\u2019t fix you. It\u2019s dancier, the most experimental I\u2019ve ever heard her. The orchestral end catches me off-guard and it\u2019s so beautiful in this setting it almost brings me to tears,\u201d Mukhtar wrote.<\/p>\n

The track is \u201cthe climax of the record,\u201d Rodrigo told iHeart Radio<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s just sort of about how when you\u2019re younger, you think falling in love with someone will fix all of your problems, and then, when you face love in reality, you realize that\u2019s not the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt\u2019s just me coming to terms with things that I wanted to fix with myself, or things that I thought that love would solve.\u201d<\/p>\n
