It is not easy being in LeBron James<\/a>‘ shoes. Many might instantly wonder how that could be, considering everything the man has achieved in his life. But the reality is that when you possess a once-in-a-generation winning mentality, anything short of a championship is viewed as a total failure.<\/p>\n

Most people would be thrilled just to play recreational pick-up basketball with their friends at 41 years old, yet here is King James leading his team to the Western Conference semifinals against all odds.<\/p>\n

Still, as previously noted, the ultimate goal, the Larry O’Brien trophy, was not achieved at the end of the day and despite spectacular individual numbers, that remains a tough reality. However, LeBron isn’t letting the outside noise surrounding “ring culture” shake him.<\/p>\n

“You get caught up in ring culture and things of that nature. But at the end of the day, there’s 29 teams, if that’s the case, who are all failures, if that’s always the narrative. Because it’s only one champion every year,” James said<\/a> on his podcast.<\/p>\n

Ring culture has existed for as long as the league’s 80-year history and it is likely never going away. But it shouldn’t be used exclusively to discredit greatness.<\/p>\n

The mere fact that in a record-extending 23rd season, with 41 years on his back, he still manages to stay completely competitive against young, rising powerhouses like the Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> and San Antonio Spurs<\/a> is a feat in itself.<\/p>\n

Naturally, critics of the four-time NBA champion will focus solely on the negatives \u2014 the fact that his team was swept by the reigning champions, even though they were missing Luka Doncic<\/a> while Austin Reaves<\/a> was just returning from injury. Despite that, the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> remained highly competitive.<\/p>\n

James went toe-to-toe with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>, even putting up statistically superior numbers in the series. But he is well aware that Mark Daigneault’s squad simply possessed the crucial depth that the California franchise lacked.<\/p>\n

“Understanding this year, we fought and we played to the maximum ability of our team. But ultimately, if we’re being completely honest, we were out-talented. We were not outworked. We were not… they didn’t out-physical us. They didn’t outsmart us. You know, I feel like we were just out-talented, you know, by OKC. They just possessed so much more talent,” LeBron stressed.<\/p>\n

“They might have had a couple more possessions where some IQ could kick in, but that happens throughout the course of the game. That goes for both teams. I feel like there’s times where we had moments where we out-IQ’d them. So, at the end of the day, we fell short in talent. You could tip your cap to them, obviously and understand that, but yeah, you can’t get caught up in that, especially when you were undermanned, for sure,” he added.<\/p>\n

Finding the silver lining<\/p>\n

Returning to the overarching point \u2014 while a championship remains the singular motivation driving LeBron forward at this stage \u2014 should this season truly be graded as a failure, or should we look for the silver lining?<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, this is a four-time NBA champion, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, a four-time Finals MVP and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. He has thoroughly dominated every single facet of the game and has absolutely nothing left to prove to anyone.<\/p>\n

In truth, all he needs to do in these twilight years of his career is simply enjoy the game he has dedicated his entire life to. But suppressing that ultimate competitor’s mindset is easier said than done, especially when you’ve possessed it for 23 straight seasons.<\/p>\n
