{"id":657904,"date":"2026-05-22T05:59:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T05:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/657904\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T05:59:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T05:59:11","slug":"iconic-downtown-hotel-skyscraper-changes-hands-renovation-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/657904\/","title":{"rendered":"Iconic downtown hotel skyscraper changes hands; renovation coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Atlanta\u2019s sixth tallest building is set for a homecoming of sorts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials with longstanding Atlanta developer and real estate investment firm Portman today announced\u00a0their hospitality fund has acquired the Westin Peachtree Plaza, an iconic, 1,073-key hotel that\u2019s stood tall on downtown\u2019s skyline for 50 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Portman Hospitality Fund I, which focuses on acquiring large-scale full-service hotels in major U.S. markets, bought the downtown tower from Marriott International for an undisclosed price, officials announced today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marriott will keep Westin Peachtree Plaza in its portfolio under a long-term management agreement. The famous, cylindrical property originally opened in 1976 and was surpassed last year by Midtown\u2019s 1072 West Peachtree <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanta.urbanize.city\/tags\/1072-west-peachtree-street\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">skyscraper<\/a> for the fifth-tallest slot among Atlanta high-rises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition comes as Portman\u2019s plans for a <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanta.urbanize.city\/post\/amsterdam-walk-portman-filings-new-redevelopment-plans-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">major, contested redevelopment<\/a> are coming into clearer focus at the Amsterdam Walk district along Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Beltline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Portman officials, a \u201ccomprehensive renovation\u201d is in the works that that will reposition Westin Peachtree Plaza\u2019s public spaces, guest rooms, and meeting facilities prior to Atlanta\u2019s Super Bowl LXII in early 2028.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-and-caption\">\n<a class=\"fancybox\" href=\"https:\/\/atlanta.urbanize.city\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1140w\/public\/2026-05\/Westin%20Peachtree%20Plaza%20Portman%201.png?itok=5l4Y0_-7\" rel=\"article-image-set nofollow noopener\" title=\"Courtesy of Portman \" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-950w article-inline-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Westin Peachtree Plaza Portman 1.png\" width=\"950\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nCourtesy of Portman <\/p>\n<p class=\"image-and-caption\">\n<a class=\"fancybox\" href=\"https:\/\/atlanta.urbanize.city\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1140w\/public\/2026-05\/Westin%20Peachtree%20Plaza%20Portman%20atlpl-atlanta-cityscape-8333_Classic-Hor.jpeg?itok=cFc2fueP\" rel=\"article-image-set nofollow noopener\" title=\"Courtesy of Portman \" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-950w article-inline-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Westin Peachtree Plaza Portman atlpl-atlanta-cityscape-8333_Classic-Hor.jpeg\" width=\"950\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nCourtesy of Portman <\/p>\n<p>As any Atlantan knows, Portman\u2019s purchase of the 73-story building is notable in that the firm\u2019s founder, John C. Portman, Jr., originally designed and developed it.
