To become a U.S. citizen, you now have to take a citizenship test that’s twice as long as it was before, with more than half of its questions rewritten, changed or otherwise new. The 2025 version of the citizenship test contains 128 questions, only 60 of which remained unchanged from the previous version. The 2008 version of the test only had a pool of 100 potential questions. In all, 21 of the 100 questions from 2008 were removed entirely from the 2025 version, including queries like “What is freedom of religion?” and “Name one state that borders Mexico.” Meanwhile, 49 questions like “Why is it important to pay federal taxes?” are brand new. Nineteen questions from the old test have changed, and some now require more in-depth answers. For example, in 2008, you were asked to name three of the 13 original U.S. colonies. Now, in 2025, you have to know five colonies. The test used to be 10 questions long, but now it’s 20. While the score needed to pass (60%) remains the same, people now have to get twice as many questions right in order to successfully earn their citizenship.Want to see if you’d pass? Try a version of the citizenship test below! While the official test isn’t multiple choice and asks twice the number of questions, this should be a fairly accurate gauge of how you’d do on the 2025 citizenship test.
