Ever since Jessie Bates III walked in free agency in March of 2023, the Bengals’ safety room has been lacking a leader, in addition to general talent. From Dax Hill to Jordan Battle to Geno Stone, replacing Bates has been anything but successful and seamless. The Bengals even brought Vonn Bell back after letting him walk, too, in 2023. That didn’t work, either.

But enter Bryan Cook, a two-time Super Bowl champion with a proven track record of playmaking and leadership, the two qualities the Bengals’ safety room has desperately needed for three years.

And Joe Burrow can already see the impact.

”You can tell that he’s (Cook) going to set a standard in that room and make everybody live up to it and put pressure on everybody if they don’t,” Burrow told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “You see that out of Bryan Cook from Day One.”

This is very reminiscent of when Mike Hilton arrived in 2021, holding every Bengals’ defensive back, cornerback, or safety accountable. He’s just as big a reason as Bates, arguably, for the emergence of the Bengals’ secondary.

With Cook, the Bengals have that leader, a guy who played and started in 17 games in each of the last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Committed. Locked in. Good dude,” Bengals cornerback Dax Hill said of Cook. “I feel like he’s a good addition to the defense because of what he brings to the table with the experience he had at Kansas City. I have a great feeling about him. You can tell from his work ethic and how he works out.”

Not only is this a rejuvenated secondary, but it’s also a more focused secondary. They’re operating with a sense of urgency, a refreshing feeling from the last three seasons.

[63
90365,71963,349,99
post-660539","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nfl","tag-cincinnati-bengals-free-agency","tag-cincinnati-bengals-roster","tag-nfl","tag-sports
["GET
