Disney is claiming \u201cThe View\u201d is a news program \u2014 and critics are calling the media company plain \u201cGoofy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local Houston TV network KTRK-TV, and its parent company, Disney, filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission asking the agency to declare \u201cThe View\u201d a \u201cbona fide news\u201d show, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr revealed Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cDisney argues that The View qualifies as \u2018bona fide news\u2019 under the law, comparing itself to Meet The Press or Face The Nation,\u201d Carr posted on X Friday. <\/a><\/p>\n The FCC launched a probe into \u201cThe View\u201d in February. ABC via Getty Images<\/p>\n The move comes after the FCC launched a probe into the Trump-bashing show in February after it hosted an interview with Texas Democratic US Senate candidate James Talarico, potentially violating \u201cequal time\u201d rules.<\/p>\n The \u201cstatutory equal opportunities requirement\u201d of the New Deal-era Communications Act of 1934 stipulates a television show that hosts a political candidate must allow his opponent to appear on the program for the same length of time.<\/p>\n The FCC announced in February that it would reinterpret the law to include late-night and daytime talk shows. <\/p>\n News programs are exempt from equal time rules. <\/p>\n Critics say that calling the daytime talk show, which routinely involves its four female hosts screaming over each other, a \u201cbona fide\u201d news program is so outrageous it would cause Pinocchio\u2019s nose to grow for miles on end. <\/p>\n \u201cThe only thing \u2018bona fide\u2019 about \u201cThe View\u201d\u00a0is the cackling. Calling \u201cThe View\u201d\u00a0\u2018news\u2019 requires a suspension of disbelief even Disney should be familiar with,\u201d Media Research Center President David Bozell told The Post.<\/p>\n The FCC chairman asked the public to opine about whether \u201cThe View\u201d is a news show, writing \u201cThe FCC welcomes your views.\u201d<\/p>\n Disney claimed \u201cThe View\u201d is \u201cbona fide news,\u201d FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said. AP<\/p>\n The program, which is hosted by an all-female panel consisting of Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro, has long used its platform to bash Republicans and President Trump.<\/p>\n Behar recently accused Trump of wanting \u201ctoddler white nationalists\u201d in an unhinged discussion, apparently in reference to comments from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz\u00a0about \u201cTrump babies.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWhen they say \u2018more Trump babies,\u2019 what does that mean?\u201d Behar asked on a May 12 broadcast. <\/p>\n Hostin, a longtime Trump basher, chimed in and claimed the term implies \u201c[Trump] wants American-born, white children.\u201d<\/p>\n The FCC has requested public comment on Disney\u2019s claims. X\/BrendanCarrFCC<\/p>\n In a May 14 edition of the program, Goldberg spiraled over Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt\u2019s sudden surge in popularity.<\/p>\n \u201cJust because somebody is famous or is famous for something doesn\u2019t mean they know what\u2019s going on and how you are thinking and how you\u2019re feeling,\u201d Goldberg said <\/a>without a trace of irony.<\/p>\n
