Now, however, a new analysis of data from European Space Agency (ESA) satellites and other sources reveals something astonishing: Beginning in 2010, that flow abruptly changed direction to the east in a region of the outer core under the Pacific Ocean. Why exactly this occurred remains a mystery\u2014but researchers are slowly gleaning clues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Using archival observations gathered between 1997 and 2025 by sources such as ESA\u2019s Swarm and CryoSat-2 missions, which study the Earth\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/mysterious-link-between-earths-magnetism-and-oxygen-baffles-scientists\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:magnetic field;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;magnetic field&quot;}\" class=\"link \">magnetic field<\/a> and the polar ice caps, respectively, scientists pinpointed the anomalous flow of a glob of iron-rich liquid rock under the Pacific that changed direction, strongly flowing to the east instead of the west for about a decade before weakening again in 2020. They also indicate that the outer core may be influenced by hidden shifts happening within the inner core.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe large-scale flow reversal beneath the Pacific raises new questions about the behaviour of Earth\u2019s deep interior,\u201d said Frederik Dahl Madsen, a Ph.D. student at the University of Edinburgh and lead author of the study, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Applications\/Observing_the_Earth\/FutureEO\/Swarm\/Insights_into_Earth_s_molten_outer_core_from_space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:statement;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;statement&quot;}\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Other data suggest that something was indeed happening within the inner core that may have influenced the change in direction in the outer core, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cScientists now want to understand whether the reversal represents a short-lived fluctuation, part of a repeating oscillation, or a new stable equilibrium for core circulation,\u201d he said. \u201cContinued monitoring will be essential to determine how the flow evolves over the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Understanding what happens so deep in Earth\u2019s interior is crucial to knowing how our planet works, how it evolves over time and how those changes affect its protective magnetic field. Safeguarding our satellites and even Earth\u2019s biosphere against radiation from outer space, it turns out, sometimes requires looking deeper within.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis research raises intriguing questions about how Earth\u2019s deepest layers are dynamically connected,\u201d said ESA Swarm mission scientist Elisabetta Iorfida in the same statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAs the magnetic field continues to evolve,\u201d she added, \u201csatellite missions are providing an increasingly detailed view of the dynamic processes unfolding deep inside our planet, revealing that Earth\u2019s core may be far more variable and complex than once believed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Earth\u2019s molten outer core is critical to life on our planet.
