They’re curious, playful, and love exploring the world around them. And when things don’t go their way, they actually throw tantrums, just like a toddler. They may trumpet loudly, stomp around, roll in the mud, or push at things to show they’re upset. These outbursts are a normal way for them to release frustration.

According to BBC Wildlife, baby elephants even suck on their trunks to self-soothe, much like babies and toddlers suck their thumbs. Newborn elephants have little control over their trunks at first and learn how to use them by touching herd members, their surroundings, and themselves.

BBC Wildlife also shares this fun fact: “Though trunk-sucking is more common in the early stages of life, elephants of all ages do it — even big, old bulls — usually when they are feeling nervous or unsure.”

We can’t wait to watch Monty-Aaron grow; mama elephant and his caretakers are definitely going to have their hands full trying to keep up with him!

This story was originally published by PetHelpful on May 24, 2026, where it first appeared in the Pet News section.
