Forget the inevitability of the tide; the pleasure lies in watching the sand take shape, carving levels, adding details\u2014moats, flags, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com.au\/vogue-living\/design\/12-shellinspired-homewares-to-treasure-now-and-forever\/image-gallery\/9a3254bf0a8c41c615e227c3fd7e070e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">seashell<\/a> windows\u2014and becoming an architect of sand, even if just for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Dungan is an actual architect (he\u2019s the founder and creative director of <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/jeffreydungan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jeffrey Dungan Architects<\/a>), but he knows the feeling well. \u201cThese houses feel a little like sandcastles,\u201d he says, referring to the Hill section of Manhattan Beach, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com.au\/vogue-living\/interiors\/21-breezy-californian-homes-to-have-you-dreaming-of-a-sea-change\/image-gallery\/c7ee4a32fda4e90170842b5529278160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">California<\/a>, \u201cwith similar shapes and colours and textures.\u201d Built on what were once exposed sand dunes, nearly every home in the neighbourhood has tiered, unobstructed views of the <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com.au\/vogue-living\/design\/coastal-grandmother-interiors\/image-gallery\/5607fd98be8d15b73f680331943c5bb1?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pacific<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There\u2019s a particular joy in building sandcastles\u2014anyone with a bucket and shovel on a beach knows it.
