The agreement being finalised between the US and Iran would, if finalised, mark an ‘American capitulation’ and reflect the gradual weakening of Israeli influence on President Donald Trump’s decisions. This is according to an analysis published by the Israeli daily Haaretz, which reconstructs diplomatic and military developments between Washington, Tehran, and Israel.<\/p>\n
According to the analysis, the understanding has not yet been signed and details remain partial, but the most likely scenario would involve a containment of Iran’s nuclear programme without substantially addressing other issues considered crucial by Israel and the US, including the ballistic missile programme, Iranian support for regional armed groups, and the possibility of regime change in Tehran. An outcome that, according to Haaretz, would be far from the promises of ‘victory’ made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
The newspaper also traces the political and strategic confrontation between Netanyahu and the US administrations on the Iranian dossier, recalling how in 2015 the Israeli prime minister harshly opposed the nuclear agreement signed by then-President Barack Obama before the US Congress, breaking diplomatic customs. Three years later, Netanyahu allegedly convinced Trump to withdraw from the deal, initiating a policy of ‘maximum pressure’ that, according to the analysis, would not, however, have prevented Iran from increasing its uranium enrichment capabilities; up to around 440 kilograms at 60 per cent.<\/p>\n
