TOKYO, May 26 (Reuters) – Japan’s government retained its assessment in May that the economy was recovering moderately, while warning \u200cthat tensions in the Middle East and fluctuations in financial \u200cmarkets remain key risks to the outlook.<\/p>\n
Here are the main points from the \u200breport:<\/p>\n
\u2022 On private consumption, the assessment was unchanged as “showing movements of picking up”, but cautioning that consumer sentiment has been weak recently.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On business investment, capital spending was again described as “picking up”.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On exports, \u200cthe government kept its \u2060view as “almost flat”. Exports to the Middle East, centred mainly on automobiles, have fallen significantly although they account \u2060for only 4% of total shipments.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On imports, stable on the whole but crude oil imports from the Middle East decreased significantly \u200bin April. \u200bThe government is proceeding with alternative \u200bsourcing for crude oil, \u200cwhich it expects to make up for about 80% of the required quantity by June.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On industrial production, output remains “flat”, unchanged from the previous report.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On corporate earnings, the government struck a slightly upbeat note to say profits “are showing movements of improvement” while urging \u200ca watchful eye on the impact of \u200bMiddle East developments.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On prices, consumer \u200bprices continued to be described \u200bas “rising moderately”. Corporate goods prices have been “rising recently”, \u200cit said, from April’s “rising moderately”.<\/p>\n
\u2022 On \u200bthe outlook, the \u200bgovernment kept its view that improvements in employment and income conditions, along with the effects of various policies, are expected \u200bto support a \u200cgradual recovery. The authorities will continue monitoring the impact of \u200bthe Middle East situation, financial and capital market volatility.<\/p>\n
