Actor and musician Greg Evigan joined host Kenneth Womack <\/a>to talk about becoming \u201cpossessed\u201d by the Beatles, his new album and much more on \u201cEverything Fab Four<\/a>,\u201d a podcast co-produced by me and Womack \u2014 a music scholar who also writes about pop music for Salon \u2014 and distributed by Salon.<\/p>\n

Evigan, best known for his roles on the classic TV series \u201cB.J. and the Bear\u201d and \u201cMy Two Dads,\u201d (which co-starred previous \u201cEverything Fab Four\u201d guest Paul Reiser<\/a>), has also long been a singer and composer. As he told Womack, \u201cWith every show I ever did I was always thinking, how can I incorporate my music into it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Evigan began piano lessons at the age of eight due to his \u201cvery inspirational\u201d mother who was an \u201cincredible pianist,\u201d so he already had music in his blood by the time he was 10 years old when The Beatles <\/a>first appeared on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he said of watching them perform, \u201cMy sister and me \u2013 I don\u2019t know what happened to us. We were just jumping all over. It was the best thing we\u2019d ever heard. From then on I was hooked. When the Beatles came along, I knew that\u2019s what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evigan started playing in bands in high school and then, just months after graduation, he was cast in the Broadway production of \u201cJesus Christ Superstar.\u201d As he said with a laugh, \u201cI pretty much went from a school bus to a tour bus.\u201d He then moved on to the starring role of Danny Zuko in a stage production of \u201cGrease\u201d (replacing Barry Bostwick <\/a>at the time) and from there, Hollywood \u2013 where one of his earliest roles included a bit part in Ringo Starr\u2019s <\/a>1978 TV special, \u201cRingo.\u201d He also starred in Don Kirschner\u2019s \u201cA Year at the Top\u201d with fellow Beatles fan and previous \u201cEverything Fab Four\u201d guest Paul Shaffer<\/a>, with whom Evigan remains good friends, plus over 150 other films and series. He\u2019s also written songs for Meghan Trainor and Chromeo, among other artists.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

As for his new album, \u201cGreg Evigan with London\u2019s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,\u201d<\/a> it was recorded in Studio One (\u201cthe Big Room\u201d) at Abbey Road Studios, an experience Evigan described as \u201cincredible.\u201d The song Womack named as his favorite from the album, \u201cTears Like Rain,\u201d was actually composed by Evigan when he was a teenager, saying the Beatles have always figured into the \u201cclassical component\u201d of his musical journey. \u201cIt\u2019s their endless, beautiful melodies. You could play them with a full orchestra, and it would still sound like something you would want to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n
