Last fall, Apple launched<\/a> a new Digital ID feature in the Wallet app. Now, that feature can officially be used as an age verification method in several cases on iPhone. Here\u2019s what that means.<\/p>\n Apple\u2019s Digital ID launched with TSA checkpoint acceptance, and the promise of more to come<\/p>\n Apple Wallet has offered support for IDs and driver\u2019s licenses for years. But US states have been pretty slow at partnering on the feature.<\/p>\n So in iOS 26, Apple came up an alternative solution called \u2018Digital ID.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n Here\u2019s Apple\u2019s description<\/a>:<\/p>\n Digital ID offers a secure and private way for users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport, and present their ID with iPhone or Apple Watch<\/p>\n Essentially, while states are still working toward rolling out digital driver\u2019s licenses, Apple lets any iPhone user create a Digital ID with a US passport.<\/p>\n At launch, Digital ID was accepted at TSA security checkpoints in over 250 US airports for domestic travel. <\/p>\n Apple promised more use cases to come. It said<\/a>, \u201cIn the future, users will be able to present their Digital ID at additional select businesses and organizations for identity and age verification in person, in apps, and online.\u201d<\/p>\n And recently, the first part of that promised expansion arrived.<\/p>\n Digital ID can now be used for Apple Account and Apple services age verification<\/p>\n Age verification for apps and online services is a hot topic in legislation and public debate. Some prominent recent examples include the UK\u2019s Online Safety Act<\/a> and Discord\u2019s controversial<\/a> age verification rollout.<\/p>\n Here in the US, there\u2019s a wave of activity happening at state and federal levels for age verification too.<\/p>\n And per a recent Apple support document<\/a>, Digital ID is now ready to be used for select age verification purposes.<\/p>\n The document is titled, \u201cIf you\u2019re asked to confirm that you\u2019re an adult\u201d and includes instructions for what to do if you see an age verification prompt when creating a new Apple Account or using Apple services.<\/p>\n Apple says you might be asked to confirm you\u2019re an adult when: creating a new Apple Account, updating your device\u2019s software, trying to change certain safety settings, or downloading or purchasing apps with an 18+ age rating.<\/p>\n Several age verification methods are supported, including this key line:<\/p>\n *Regardless of your country or region, Digital ID in Apple Wallet created using a U.S. passport can also be used to confirm that you\u2019re an adult.<\/p>\n Per this recent update, Digital ID is now officially accepted as an approved age verification method for Apple Accounts and Apple services.<\/p>\n This means users won\u2019t have to share another, potentially more sensitive form of ID. They can just use their secure, private Digital ID from Apple Wallet.<\/p>\n For now, I\u2019m guessing there aren\u2019t many users who have a Digital ID and need to prove their age to Apple. That\u2019s because the earliest policy changes have happened overseas, not in the US.
