The deep-plane face-lift<\/a> has been on a generational run. The procedure went from a hush-hush technique<\/a> appreciated by those in the know to being publicly flaunted by the likes of Kris Jenner, who recently went on record to make sure everybody knew just how much she loves hers (courtesy of Dr. Steven Levine). The deep-plane face-lift has entered the collective consciousness, prompting the people of the internet to point their fingers at various other celebrities and accuse them of having gone under the knife incognito. But you know who got one and actually managed to fly under the radar this whole time? Rosie O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n On May 25, the actress published her latest Substack post<\/a>: a poem (yes, a poem) that details her complicated feelings about the deep-plane face-lift she got in January. \u201cI used to feel very strongly about facelifts,\u201d she wrote. \u201cNot casually \u2014 morally. I had assigned myself as head of all women who would never \u2014 ever. I thought it was a betrayal. Of feminism. Of aging. Of our team of women worldwide.\u00a0And then I lost 50 pounds.\u201d (In a 2021 Vulture interview<\/a>, O\u2019Donnell said she had vowed never to have plastic surgery and explained that her decision had been helping her get more roles as she approached 60. \u201cI was going to look the way a woman my age should look,\u201d she said.)<\/p>\n After her significant weight loss, O\u2019Donnell claimed, and despite her best efforts to accept her \u201cearned\u201d wrinkles, she began researching surgical options. But her plans were derailed for months when Clay, her 13-year-old child, voiced their feelings about their mom getting plastic surgery<\/a>. \u201cIt was not subtle. \u2018You earned your wrinkles.\u2019 Which \u2014 first of all \u2014 rude. But also \u2026 correct,\u201d O\u2019Donnell wrote. \u201cThen clay said, \u2018Young women look up to you.\u2019 And finally \u2014 with strong effect \u2014 \u2018I wouldn\u2019t be able to respect you if you did it.\u2019 And that one \u2026 landed.\u201d<\/p>\n But ultimately, O\u2019Donnell went through with it, deciding that exercising the free will she has and achieving a \u201cless haunted\u201d version of herself didn\u2019t mean she was compromising her morals. \u201cIf I\u2019m teaching clay anything, it can\u2019t be that my body belongs to an idea either,\u201d she wrote. \u201cEven a good idea. Even feminism.\u201d<\/p>\n The comedian claimed that nobody, not even her friends or her teenager, had noticed. \u201cWhich honestly is the best possible outcome,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI didn\u2019t disappear, I didn\u2019t become someone else \u2014 I just stopped arguing with the mirror.\u201d However, while she doesn\u2019t \u201cowe anyone an explanation,\u201d O\u2019Donnell said she felt the urge to come clean because of a \u201csense of deceit,\u201d which she said mirrors how she felt when she was a closeted woman in entertainment during the \u201990s and early aughts.<\/p>\n In the Substack post, she went on to explain that her feeling of shame around her secret was also rooted in the privilege required to spend more than she has ever spent on a car to alter her appearance. It\u2019s \u201cthe gross excess that wounds me,\u201d she wrote. But she concluded she is happy to have the freedom to choose and \u201cuse her voice\u201d for \u201cthe girl I was, the woman I am, and all those joining my ranks we carry on in act 3.
