Texas Tech, which was recently derided by Tom Brady as a \u201cglorified community college<\/a>\u201d (yes, comedy is hard), is taking on the overseer of the college football community.<\/p>\n

Via Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, the school\u2019s president said Tuesday that it will appeal<\/a> the NCAA\u2019s decision not to reinstate the eligibility of quarterback Brendan Sorsby.<\/p>\n

Sorsby has admitted to placing chronic bets during his tenure at Indiana and Cincinnati. He recently completed an in-patient program for gambling addiction.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrendan himself has been open about his struggle with severe gambling addiction, and we believe his vulnerability deserves to be met with the full weight of this institution\u2019s support,\u201d school president Lawrence Schovanec said. \u201cOur foremost priority in contemplating Brendan\u2019s future with Texas Tech is his continued health and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sorsby transferred earlier this year from Cincinnati to Texas Tech.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a generation of college athletes face the legalization and rapid proliferation of sports betting in our country, gambling addiction is rising to the point of epidemic among college aged men in particular,\u201d Schovanec said. \u201cThe NCAA\u2019s stated mission includes \u2018fostering [student-athletes\u2019] lifelong well-being,\u2019 and they have claimed their goal is to promote a \u201cculture of care\u201d for student athletes\u2019 mental health. Gambling addiction is a clinically recognized behavioral disorder, as defined in the DSM-5.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Sorsby\u2019s lawyers have argued in the court filing challenging the NCAA\u2019s handling of his case, there\u2019s a strong element of hypocrisy that flows from the NCAA\u2019s efforts to monetize legalized gambling while also creating strict rules regarding players who engage in otherwise legal activities.<\/p>\n

The stewards of the various sports aren\u2019t required to stuff their pockets with gambling cash. They have chosen to do so. And they also have chosen to take a \u201cdo as we say, not as we do\u201d stance as to those who play the games.
