Paul Finebaum<\/a> believes college football is heading toward even greater chaos. The longtime ESPN personality didn\u2019t hold back while discussing the growing instability<\/a> surrounding the sport\u2019s future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During an appearance on Get Up, Finebaum painted a grim picture of where things are headed as conference leaders continue searching for answers involving a number of issues, including NIL<\/a>, the transfer portal<\/a> and potential federal legislation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will leave here, and what the university presidents are leaning on is Congress bailing them out, and they are not going to do it,\u201d Finebaum said, regarding the SEC meetings. \u201cCongress can\u2019t do anything in terms of world peace, they\u2019re not going to bail college athletics out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finebaum\u2019s comments come as leaders<\/a> from both the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten Conference continue exploring possible self-governance models amid growing frustration with the NCAA and lack of progress in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Discussions around conference-led regulation intensified during SEC spring meetings this week after the collapse of the SCORE Act, an NCAA-backed bill that would have provided legal protections tied to roster management and athlete compensation. Finebaum believes the current situation is only getting worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis place right here, the SEC and the Big Ten, have wasted hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying Congress,\u201d Finebaum continued. \u201cI heard a university president tell me there\u2019s another bill coming out this week, it\u2019s a bipartisan bill. It won\u2019t go anywhere, but that\u2019s how desperate this field is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the chaos, one of the loudest voices pushing for major structural change has been Kirby Smart<\/a>. The Georgia<\/a> head coach openly acknowledged<\/a> this week that he would support the SEC operating independently if national standards cannot be created across college athletics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said this for a long time to our president, I\u2019ve been a huge advocate that if we can\u2019t find rules that everybody plays by, then we should play on our own,\u201d Smart said<\/a> Tuesday. \u201cI\u2019m not afraid of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018This is a good place compared to where it will be a year from today\u2019<\/p>\n

That growing frustration is now being echoed across the sport, particularly among power conference administrators worried about unchecked spending and inconsistent enforcement. According to Finebaum, one prominent SEC figure believes college football has already entered dangerous territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cJere Morehead, the President of Georgia, told me, \u2018We are in anarchy right now,\u2019\u201d Finebaum explained. \u201cAnd by the way, this is a good place compared to where it will be a year from today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Greg Sankey<\/a> admitted<\/a> this week that conference-led governance may eventually become necessary if Congress cannot act quickly enough to establish nationwide rules: \u201cThe fact that we\u2019re talking about our own rules isn\u2019t anything new,\u201d Sankey said<\/a> Monday night. \u201cWhat you\u2019re hearing is the expression of frustration about the lack of progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

With NIL continuing to reshape recruiting and roster construction across the country, the pressure surrounding college football\u2019s future only continues to grow.
