And I felt that at some point, I&#8217;d get another opportunity, whether it was a head coach or an assistant coaching position. So I just kind of rolled with it. The path to get here, though, proved Brown was also ready \u2014 for another chance at the top job, for the pressure that came with Finals-or-bust expectations, and for the challenge of synthesizing all that he\u2019s learned in three decades on NBA benches into an approach capable of getting championship-level results out of this <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/nba\/teams\/new-york\/\" data-i13n=\"sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link\" data-ylk=\"slk:New York;sec:content-canvas;subsec:anchor_text;elm:context_link;itc:0\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;New York&quot;,&quot;ySubModuleName&quot;:&quot;anchor_text&quot;,&quot;yHasCommerce&quot;:false}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> roster.<\/p>\n<p>And while everybody watches the two titans out West slug it out for the right to host the Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals, Brown can think about what being the first Knicks coach to hoist the Larry O\u2019Brien Championship Trophy since Red Holzman in 1973 would mean.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He can think about it. He probably won\u2019t, though. Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I took the job, I thought about it,\u201d Brown said during a Zoom conference call with reporters on Sunday. \u201cBut going through this process, one of the things that I\u2019m trying really hard to do \u2014 and trying really hard to make sure our team does from the top down \u2014 is to stay present. And what I mean by that is, we don\u2019t wanna get ahead of ourselves, because as soon as we start getting ahead of ourselves, that\u2019s when disaster always occurs, it seems. And so for us, starting with me, making sure everybody in the organization understands it\u2019s about the next game \u2014 and, really, it\u2019s about the next possession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That kind of relentless focus on the next task \u2014 on winning the next possession, and the one after that, and the one after that \u2014 sounds awfully similar to the approach famously espoused by Brown\u2019s predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He had big shoes to fill\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Tom Thibodeau preached process, persistence, a maniacal attention to detail. You can\u2019t skip steps; the magic is in the work. In his first season, they finished over .500 and made the playoffs for the first time in eight years. They were all connected, and they all believed in each other, and in the process, while holding each other accountable.
