\n\tOlivia Rodrigo has spoken about the online controversy<\/a> surrounding her recent choice to wear a babydoll dress, stating that the logic behind the criticism showed how \u201cwe really normalize pedophilia in our culture\u201d and that she was actually inspired by music icons like Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love to wear them.<\/p>\n

\n\tRodrigo recently donned the dresses in her \u201cDrop Dead\u201d music video and at her recent Spotify\u2019s Billions Club Live concert, eliciting online criticism that the look infantilized and sexualized her. \u201cThat\u2019s been making me so upset,\u201d she said in a clip from the New York Times Popcast, which will release the full episode tomorrow. \u201cNot even for me. People can say whatever they want. What\u2019s really disturbing is I have worn outfits that are maybe revealing on stage. I\u2019ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and little shorts, which is my right, that\u2019s fun, I felt cool and comfortable in that. And that wasn\u2019t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deemed to be childlike was inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pop singer explained that the reactionary response shows \u201chow we really normalize pedophilia in our culture. Also it\u2019s just this rhetoric we\u2019re fed as girls since we\u2019re so little, which is, don\u2019t wear that because then a man is going to sexualize your body and it\u2019s your fault. It\u2019s so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRodrigo clarified that she didn\u2019t think wearing a babydoll dress sexualized her, and that it was intended as an homage to the \u201990s rock icons who inspired her. \u201cI didn\u2019t think that I looked sexy in that at all,\u201d she said. \u201cI was like, this is so cool. I feel I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, all these people who are my heroes, and I felt cool and comfortable in it. I just think if we start dressing in a way that\u2019s like, \u2018I don\u2019t want some fucking freak to think that I\u2019m sexy like a baby\u2019 or some crazy thing like that, I think it\u2019s losing the plot a little bit. I\u2019m just very protective of younger women, girls, and I don\u2019t ever want them to be fed that rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHer Popcast appearance comes in anticipation of her third album, \u201cYou Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,\u201d releasing on June 12.
