According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/press.lvcva.com\/news-releases\/hoover-dam-transformed-by-most-ambitious-patriotic-display-in-its-history-as-road-to-america250-begi\/s\/64c8c3b5-cd97-46f4-b2ee-ae8fe6592878\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">news release<\/a> published by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the display is meant to launch several weeks of patriotic celebrations as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/america250.org\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">America250<\/a> initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The display, which utilizes about 2,250 amperes of Hoover Dam\u2019s hydroelectric power, will be activated every evening until July 4. Behind it, Lake Mead continues to experience a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/national-parks\/article\/despite-calif-rains-largest-reservoir-in-peril-21273482.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">dismal year<\/a>. Severe drought throughout the Southwest has left the lake at the lowest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/lc\/region\/g4000\/hourly\/mead-elv.html\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">level<\/a> it\u2019s seen in years, and recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lake\/planyourvisit\/harmful-blue-green-algae-blooms-habs.htm\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">algae blooms<\/a> have caused portions of the lake to become potentially toxic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April, the Bureau of Reclamation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/newsroom\/news-release\/5326\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">announced<\/a> a plan to reduce water releases from Lake Powell\u00a0as water storage levels declined along the Colorado River \u2014 a move that could potentially reduce hydroelectric power output at Hoover Dam by 40%. In the same announcement, the bureau said that recreational boating at Lake Mead could be limited this summer due to low water levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A ceremony to launch the America250 display at Hoover Dam took place over Memorial Day weekend and included remarks from the governors of Nevada and Arizona. Genevieve Johnson, the Bureau of Reclamation\u2019s acting regional director, also spoke at the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several federal agencies are listed as <a href=\"https:\/\/america250.org\/our-partners\/federal-agencies\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ex officio partners<\/a> of America250, including the Supreme Court, the Department of\u00a0Defense, the Department of the Interior and the Department of Justice.
