Brewers fireballer Jacob Misiorowski and Phillies ace Cristopher S\u00e1nchez both just put up some of the best Mays in MLB history. Let’s break it down.<\/p>\n

The Miz: Misiorowski<\/a> has pitched to a 0.29 ERA in five starts this month, allowing one run and 11 hits in 31.1 innings while striking out 49 batters and walking just six. And he did it all while throwing the ball harder than any starting pitcher ever has before.<\/p>\n

May 1: 5.1 IP, 8 K, 2 BB, 0 H, 0 R (W) \u2026 He was pulled from his no-hitter<\/a> with a cramp after throwing a 98.9 mph heater \u2014 his second-slowest of the night.<\/p>\n

May 8: 6 IP, 11 K, 2 BB, 2 H, 0 R (W) \u2026 He threw the fastest pitch by a starter<\/a> (103.6 mph) since tracking began in 2008\u2026 plus the next six fastest. Wild.<\/p>\n

May 13: 7 IP, 10 K, 0 BB, 4 H, 0 R (ND) \u2026 His 93rd and final pitch was a 103.2 mph fastball, and earlier he threw the fifth-fastest pitch<\/a> ever by a starter.<\/p>\n

By the numbers: Add in his first six starts of the year and Misiorowski is 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA (fourth-best in MLB) and 0.83 WHIP (second-best) for the first-place Brewers. He leads baseball with 100 strikeouts, and his 40.3% strikeout rate would be the best ever in a single season<\/a> (min. 100 IP).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia<\/a>: S\u00e1nchez capped off his own epic May on Wednesday by extending his scoreless innings streak to 44.2, breaking a 115-year-old Phillies record<\/a> set by Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander. He hasn’t allowed a run since the first inning of his final April start.<\/p>\n

The lefty’s ERA (1.47 ERA) and WAR (3.7) both lead the majors, and he’s helped the second-place Phillies turn their season around.<\/p>\n

Let the games begin: Misiorowski and S\u00e1nchez are joined by a host of other hurlers in a loaded NL Cy Young race. L.A’s Shohei Ohtani has a microscopic (but not yet qualified) 0.82 ERA, Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes has MLB’s best WHIP (0.82), and Atlanta’s Chris Sale (1.89 ERA, 0.87 WHIP) and Cincinnati’s Chase Burns (1.96 ERA, 0.96 WHIP) have been nearly unhittable.<\/p>\n

In the SEC, collective bargaining has gone from long-shot discussions to full-blown presentations. More preliminary talks are expected this week in Destin, Florida, where college football’s most-watched conference is holding its spring business meetings.<\/p>\n

Last week, near the steps of the U.S. Capitol, a scene unfolded that encapsulates the troublesome predicament in which college athletics finds itself. Flanked by the leader of a players association, the president of the NAACP and members of the Congressional Black Caucus, a college football player spoke into a microphone to deliver a message.<\/p>\n

“It’s important that people hear what athletes have to say,” said Jackson Pruitt, a Temple offensive lineman. “It’s important that we push for player representation and some kind of player union that gets us what we deserve.”<\/p>\n

Not far away, while participating in a panel held by Democratic Congresswoman Lori Trahan, a group of women’s basketball players unleashed a fury of comments directed at college leaders. One of them, some might contend, said the quiet part out loud.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s time to come to the truth: We are employees,” said Oluchi Okananwa, a Maryland women’s hoops player from Boston and the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year last season.<\/p>\n

College sports executives may claim that these players were used as tools for partisan lawmakers at a divisive time in American politics. But their message \u2014\u00a0schools should deem athletes employees and bargain with them\u00a0\u2014 is beginning to gain traction at the highest levels of the industry, including within the SEC and its powerful group of university presidents, chancellors and athletic directors.<\/p>\n

“I never thought I’d say it, but I’m there on employment,” one of those SEC presidents told Yahoo Sports recently. “Let’s collectively bargain.”<\/p>\n

In a bid to promote greater transparency, the PWHL Players’ Association has released salaries to the public<\/a> for the first time following the conclusion of the upstart women’s hockey league’s third season.<\/p>\n

What the numbers tell us: The average salary for the 2025-26 season was roughly $58k, according to the database<\/a>, with salaries ranging from $37k to $126k. Only 10 players earned six figures, while roughly two-thirds made under $60K.<\/p>\n

The Nationals might not end up in the playoffs this fall, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a brand of baseball more entertaining than the kind being exhibited so far in the nation’s capital.<\/p>\n

Runs galore: The surprisingly pesky Nats are hovering just above .500 (29-28) thanks to an offense that has scored the most runs in baseball (306). So how is it that they’re only just barely a winning baseball team? Because they’ve also allowed the most runs in baseball (310).<\/p>\n

Their lineup has the third-best OPS in the NL (.743) behind young stars James Wood and CJ Abrams<\/a>, who’ve combined for 27 HR and 84 RBI.<\/p>\n

But their pitching staff has the third-worst ERA in the NL (4.64), and they’ve committed 51 errors, by far the most in the majors (the Rays<\/a> have the next-most, with 39).<\/p>\n

Bottom line: Washington<\/a> has been stuck in an interminable rebuild, finishing in last place all but one year since winning the 2019 World Series. But early returns this season are promising \u2014 and if nothing else, give a win-starved fan base something fun to watch most nights.<\/p>\n
