The marketing’s gotten so slick it’s hard to tell the science from the hustle.

I’ve been writing about money for more than 40 years. Every decade brings a new “you can buy your way to a better outcome” pitch. Most of them don’t pan out.

Before you sign up for the executive longevity package, here are five things you should know.

1. The longevity industry is now a massive business

Researchers at SNS Insider value the global longevity market at $27.61 billion in 2025, with projections of $67 billion by 2035.

That’s a lot of customers, roughly 120 million of them in 2025, by the firm’s count.

What’s driving it? A massive aging population, an obsession with biological-age testing, and a flood of venture money. Mordor Intelligence reports that single cellular-reprogramming funding rounds now top $3 billion.

The longevity boom isn’t a fringe wellness fad anymore. It’s a healthcare megatrend. And like every megatrend before it, the marketing’s outrunning the evidence.

2. The FDA doesn’t consider aging a disease — so there are no approved anti-aging drugs

Here’s the part the brochures bury. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves drugs to treat specific diseases. As of right now, aging isn’t one of them.

Translation: Every longevity drug you’ve heard of — rapamycin, metformin, peptides — is being used off-label. None has been approved to slow human aging.

That matters for two reasons. First, your insurance won’t pay. Second, the safety data for using these drugs as longevity tools, rather than for the conditions they were originally approved to treat, is thin.

The American Federation for Aging Research has spent years pushing a landmark trial called TAME — Targeting Aging with Metformin. The goal is to convince the FDA to recognize aging as something treatable. After years of fundraising, it’s still partially funded and incomplete.

So when a clinic tells you they’re prescribing the latest longevity protocol, remember that no regulator has signed off on it yet.

3. Even the most promising drug comes with serious asterisks

In July 2025, researchers at UT Health San Antonio published the first comprehensive review of the NIH National Institute on Aging’s 20-year Interventions Testing Program. The standout compound? Rapamycin, which extended animal lifespan by up to 28%.

Sounds amazing. Here’s the catch.

Rapamycin is an immunosuppressant. Its known side effects include impaired wound healing, elevated blood sugar, and higher infection risk. Long-term human safety data at low longevity doses simply doesn’t exist yet.

Bryan Johnson — the tech millionaire who spends $2 million a year on his Blueprint anti-aging protocol — actually quit rapamycin. He cited those exact side effects himself.

If the guy who’s turned his own body into a science experiment can’t make it work, that ought to give the rest of us pause.

Quick aside — most internet financial advice comes from people who weren’t alive during the last recession. I’ve been writing about money for more than 40 years. Want rock-solid advice? Sign up for the free Money Talks Newsletter. Takes 10 seconds. No fluff. No spam.

4. The cost of going all-in is out of control — and out of pocket

Most people picture a $50 supplement bottle when they hear “longevity.” The reality looks more like this.

A Prenuvo whole-body MRI membership starts at $1,199 a year. Its Executive membership runs $3,999 — or $4,499 if you’re in New York City.

Human Longevity’s Executive Health screening is around $8,000 a pop. The Cleveland Clinic’s executive physical tops out around $25,000. The Mayo Clinic’s program isn’t cheap either.

Want to copy Bryan Johnson’s Blueprint supplement stack? His core monthly bill is roughly $360. Layer on his full protocol — every test, medication, and monitoring tool — and he says he spends $2 million a year.

And here’s the kicker: Practically none of this is covered by insurance. It’s all out of pocket.

Now keep in mind, you’ve already got a hefty medical bill coming. Fidelity estimates a 65-year-old retiring in 2025 will spend an average of $172,500 on health care over the course of retirement. Stack a $20,000-a-year longevity habit on top of that and you’re trading the retirement you’re trying to extend for an unproven shot at extending it.

5. The boring stuff still wins

Now for the punch line. Decades of research — the kind paid for by the NIH, not by supplement companies — keep landing in the same boring spot.

A study published in The Lancet’s eClinicalMedicine in early 2026 tracked 59,000 U.K. adults. Adding just 15 extra minutes of sleep, 1.6 extra minutes of moderate exercise, and half a serving of vegetables per day was linked to a 10% drop in all-cause mortality.

Fifteen minutes. Not $20,000 a year.

Other research links a small set of basic habits — moving more, not smoking, managing stress, limiting alcohol, eating well, decent sleep, social connection — to roughly 20-plus extra years of life for people who hit them all by middle age. Layer in proven daily practices like learning something new and staying socially engaged, and the picture gets even better.

I’m not saying every longevity tool is snake oil. Whole-body MRIs can catch real problems. Biomarker testing is genuinely useful for some people. Knowing your numbers matters.

But if you’re a normal person with normal income trying to maximize healthy years, the order of operations is simple: Nail the cheap, proven basics first. Then, if you’ve got money left over, look at the fancy stuff.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that U.S. life expectancy at birth hit 79 years in 2024, the highest in our history. We’re already living longer, and almost none of it has anything to do with $4,000 MRIs.

The bottom line

The longevity industry will keep getting louder. The promises will keep getting bigger.

But until aging is officially treatable and the science catches up to the marketing, the smartest money play is also the dullest one: Move more, sleep better, eat your vegetables, ditch the cigarettes, and keep your friends close.

If you do all that and still want to drop $1,200 on a yearly MRI? Go ahead. Just don’t trade your retirement savings for an unproven shot at immortality.

That’s a transaction the salesman wins every time.

The pitch is irresistible: Pay enough money, take enough supplements, get enough whole-body MRIs, and you can hold…

[59
97,252,253
post-671141","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare
["GET
