When it comes to superfoods<\/a>, moringa seemingly ranks high on many lists\u2014especially with a nickname like \u201cmiracle tree.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Cleveland Clinic<\/a> explains that moringa leaves\u2014native to southern regions of Asia\u2014are leafy greens (similar to spinach) with a bitter, peppery taste. Its powdered form closely resembles matcha\u2019s<\/a> \u201cgrassy\u201d taste, and both types are rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and vitamins A and C.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The nutrient-packed food has made its way to the U.S., with many people turning to moringa capsules and powders for a nutritional boost\u2014but on May 26, New York-based company Total Nutrition Inc. voluntarily recalled<\/a> two of its moringa products: TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood and Doctor\u2019s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa Capsules.<\/p>\n

The FDA announcement notes that the recalled products have been distributed and sold nationwide through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Target, and the product websites.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced an outbreak investigation<\/a> into Salmonella contamination in certain products containing moringa powder. Ultimately, that outbreak affected 97 people from 32 states\u2014with 26 reported hospitalizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the FDA ended that previous investigation, the agency now says the currently recalled products \u201cmay be implicated in an ongoing investigation associated with moringa-containing dietary supplement products.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The FDA listed the following details for the latest recall:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Doctor\u2019s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa, 10,000 mg (120 capsules)<\/p>\n

Lot: 2507199 (Exp. 09\/2027)<\/p>\n

According to the report, the affected product is packaged in white HDPE supplement bottles with smooth, white caps and 120 clear capsules filled with green moringa powder.<\/p>\n

The CDC estimates<\/a> that Salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States every year, with contaminated food being the most common source. Symptoms generally resolve on their own and often include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, while more serious infections can occur in young children and older adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The CDC also cautions that warmer weather can create ideal conditions for Salmonella to grow\u2014a timely reminder as we head into prime outdoor dining time.<\/p>\n

In its announcement, Total Nutrition Inc. states that it \u201chas ceased distribution and sale of the identified product and has initiated removal orders across all applicable sales and fulfillment channels while the FDA, CDC, and the company continue their investigation.\u201d It also confirms that no other TNVitamins or Doctor\u2019s Pride products are involved.<\/p>\n

For customers who have purchased the affected products, the company asks that they \u201cdispose of them immediately.\u201d A refund can also be requested by contacting TNVitamins [at] [email\u00a0protected]<\/a> and providing the customer name and order number, along with a photo of the product with the lot codes in question.<\/p>\n

The company offered an apology to customers, saying it is committed to \u201censuring the quality of our products and the well-being of our consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n
