Ariana Grande is a master of the backhanded takedown. Her signature song, \u201cThank U Next,\u201d<\/a> is a kiss-off to all her ex-boyfriends by politely thanking them for their time before dismissing them. On that song, she was literally naming names, but she\u2019s taking a more subtle approach on the lead single off her upcoming album, Petal<\/a> (out July 31), \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me.\u201d The song could be aimed at overengaged listeners who think they own her life. \u201cI hate that I made you love me \/ Sorry if I made me your type,\u201d she sings on the chorus. \u201cYeah, I hate that I made you love me \/ \u2019Cause I barely tried.\u201d Like many of her best lyrics \u2014 \u201cBreak up with your girlfriend, \u2019cause I\u2019m bored\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019ll believe God is a woman\u201d come to mind \u2014 that chorus makes Grande the most powerful person in the world, and everyone is cowering beneath her.<\/p>\n The most direct language comes on the bridge. \u201cI\u2019ve held your projections when you\u2019ve felt so insecure \/ Tell me, why is it this way?\u201d she asks. \u201cWhy you so hate to see women endure? \/ Is it really my fault you all gave me your hearts of your own accord? \/ I don\u2019t really think so.\u201d Clearly, that line, with the notable pronoun \u201cyou all,\u201d could not be addressed to a singular person like an ex-boyfriend or friend. At one point she adds that \u201cYou studied my crown and borrowed my body.\u201d Grande has recently expressed annoyance<\/a> at onlookers who comment on her body, and this track feels like an extension of that conversation.<\/p>\n The song was written and produced by Grande with her longtime collaborators ILYA and Max Martin. On social media, she called the track \u201cone of my favorite songs I\u2019ll ever give to you \u2026 the greatest fans in the entire world.\u201d Sonically, the song is laced with barely concealed disdain for the people she\u2019s speaking to, with Grande keeping her vocals contained and precise. Rather than bang, like her previous lead single \u201cYes, And?,\u201d<\/a> \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d just lopes along. Seemingly by design, it\u2019s not the most exciting track Grande\u2019s ever released. It\u2019s down-tempo and, more than anything, a little over it. She\u2019s picking petals off flowers and landing on \u201cThey love me.\u201d Does she love them?
