A year after Fox News tried and failed<\/a> to convince its viewers\u2014and the rest of the country\u2014to turn away from the \u201cSuperman\u201d movie for being too pro-immigrant, the right-wing propaganda network is now taking aim at the upcoming \u201cSupergirl\u201d movie for being too feminist.<\/p>\n

Writer Ian Miller complains<\/a> that actor Milly Alcock, who stars as the iconic superhero, has made \u201cdivisive\u201d comments that will turn off moviegoers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHollywood has been dedicated to infusing politics into its movies at every opportunity, including into superhero movies and films targeted to children,\u201d Miller wrote.<\/p>\n

Alcock\u2019s sin? In a Vanity Fair interview<\/a> in March, she discussed sexist complaints about fantasy and science-fiction franchises with women in prominent roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cWe have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women\u2019s bodies. I can\u2019t really stop them. I can only be myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t something Alcock made up. \u201cStar Wars\u201d had to deal<\/a> with this phenomenon after the franchise featured prominent female characters\u2014like Rey Skywalker and Rose Tico\u2014after decades of focusing on white, male characters.<\/p>\n

More recently, billionaire and Trump pal Elon Musk had a meltdown<\/a>, along with other conservatives, after director Christopher Nolan cast Black and trans actors in his adaptation of \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his Fox piece, Miller claims that there are already warning signs of impending box office doom for \u201cSupergirl,\u201d including \u201cunderwhelming trailers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But fans seem plenty interested in the trailers, with the first garnering more than 24 million views<\/a> on YouTube and the second topping 27 million views<\/a> at the time of this writing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Miller rehashes Fox\u2019s complaints about last year\u2019s \u201cSuperman\u201d release, which the network attacked after director James Gunn noted that the story\u2014about an alien arriving on Earth to improve the United States and the world\u2014mimics the immigrant experience of millions living in the country.<\/p>\n

And despite claims that this rhetoric would hurt the film at the box office, \u201cSuperman\u201d topped the charts<\/a> at No. 3 at the domestic box office in 2025, coming in behind \u201cA Minecraft Movie\u201d and \u201cLilo & Stitch.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In fact, \u201cSuperman\u201d is now in the top 100<\/a> highest-grossing movies of all time.<\/p>\n

By contrast, Melania Trump\u2019s documentary<\/a> \u201cMelania\u201d was touted by Fox and didn\u2019t even come in first place<\/a> at the box office the week it was released. Now it\u2019s ranked 38th<\/a> at the domestic box office for films released in 2026.<\/p>\n

The moviegoing public didn\u2019t listen to Fox\u2019s demagoguery when \u201cSuperman\u201d was released, instead lining up<\/a> to watch a well-reviewed take<\/a> on a classic American icon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen how well \u201cSupergirl\u201d will perform, and while it\u2019s unlikely to surpass \u201cSuperman,\u201d the movie\u2019s performance at the box office probably won\u2019t have much to do with the lead actor\u2019s views on sexism.<\/p>\n

If anything, this is just the latest example of how clueless<\/a> the right is when it comes to pop culture.<\/p>\n
