That does not mean you need to avoid the water altogether, but they do urge people to be cautious. Their best tip is to keep a safe distance from any alligators in the area.

Never Feed Alligators

DNR recommends properly disposing of bait so alligators do not begin to associate people with food.

Do Not Handle or Capture Alligators

You may have heard the phrase, ‘don’t try this at home,’ but DNR says you should not try to handle or capture an alligator anywhere! Those who want to take pictures or video should do it from a safe distance.

Keep Pets and Children Safe

When walking your pets near a body of water, DNR urges people to keep them on a leash. Alligators may confuse pets for their natural prey, and animals that stray too close to the water’s edge may make an alligator a bit too interested. Additionally, children should be supervised when close to the water.

Know the Signs and Nesting Season

Look for signs of alligators, including mound-shaped nests or areas with dense vegetation, where alligators are known to hide. June and July are alligator nesting season, and gators will defend their nests from anything, or anyone, that gets too close. DNR recommends only swimming during the day, as alligators are most active at night.

What to Do if an Alligator Approaches

Finally, if an alligator approaches you, quickly and calmly move to a spot a safe distance away. Then, notify authorities.

As warmer temperatures bring increased alligator activity across the state, Georgia DNR reminds you to follow these waterway…

[51
79,201
post-674505","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-science","tag-wildlife
["GET
