The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art unveils its major expansion in Bentonville on June 6-7, featuring new galleries and community spaces.<\/p>\n
BENTONVILLE, Ark. \u2014 Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is preparing to open the doors to its major expansion next week, with museum leaders saying the project represents more than just additional gallery space.<\/p>\n
Founder Alice Walton, Board Chair Olivia Walton, and architect Moshe Safdie gathered Friday in Bentonville to discuss the vision behind the expansion, which opens to the public June 6 and 7.<\/p>\n
The expansion adds new galleries, learning spaces, and community gathering areas as Crystal Bridges continues growing its footprint and mission in Northwest Arkansas.<\/p>\n
For founder Alice Walton, the museum\u2019s purpose has remained consistent.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody deserves great art, and everybody deserves access to art,\u201d Walton said.<\/p>\n
Walton said the museum was never intended simply as a tourist destination, but as a world-class institution rooted in Arkansas and designed to elevate how people see the region and themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cPart of the goal was to help elevate the way people view their home state and their home region,\u201d Walton said.<\/p>\n
That vision shaped Walton\u2019s decision to select internationally recognized architect Moshe Safdie to design Crystal Bridges. Walton said she wanted architecture that blended with the natural Ozark landscape rather than overpowering it.<\/p>\n
Safdie said that philosophy remains central to the expansion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe idea of art and nature and experiencing this beautiful site as you experience the art in it is a powerful principle,\u201d Safdie said.<\/p>\n
The expansion includes reworked galleries, new exhibition spaces, and expanded areas designed for learning and community engagement.<\/p>\n
Museum executive director Rod Bigelow said museum leaders hope the new design encourages visitors to return often.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want people to come every day,\u201d Bigelow said. \u201cWe\u2019re really committed to making sure this space feels comfortable and welcoming and relevant to the local community.\u201d<\/p>\n
That sense of accessibility extends beyond admission, which will remain free, and into how the museum serves families and children.<\/p>\n
Board Chair Olivia Walton said children were a central part of planning for the expansion.<\/p>\n
\u201cKids are always welcome,\u201d Walton said. \u201cWe want to make sure kids feel like this is a place that they belong.\u201d<\/p>\n
The expansion includes additional classroom space, learning areas, and hands-on opportunities aimed at helping young visitors feel comfortable and engaged.<\/p>\n
Olivia Walton said the additional space also allows Crystal Bridges to tell broader stories and highlight more voices.<\/p>\n
