The chemicals are not safe for living organisms to consume and are difficult to remove from water.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation of the drill and pump method is \u201cone of several from a <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rC1lZYjaw2fqj-2BPcv74Mw3FghtlJ-2FBvdX23I6vlJTubFENJyNYV-2B1AJduxb6hs8oxdQ-3D-3DZ2Vw_y7QnXQvb9jfAVuXFtKhtJEA5aRJeCAJBDzTSK0aSoRyEeUzRIt2kiXCtok5qL1LLcTvaKmuLbaXni48OUv6nCGDh60vwyRis5phuVeNJRvp487oz0fjGPg61kZnDq3o3j3GNQYs-2BxkyO32KgSwU5EzCUqyareJJwKSGoeaNE7dHgWTdD18LuUDTk2DgZDbpKmYN-2F5-2BO3-2BXAZ9TYvsODfr-2BoLuKNx1cgx4hpw3RY0jIvjT1Y78lsmVuzwt0QGkTh7GXa5LJXB1fofkNe1IQ1l0D4N0QPdMbLkD2RxopZVkeay7y5y3lCW-2BJ7aeyiIDO-2FTJmnF6PgQDuuujzwv8MZAn2GUATpl3pET1wBYlaBjzmM-3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">seven-year feasibility study<\/a> of options for reducing PFAS from groundwater and surface water,\u201d according to a May 19 MPCA release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinnesota\u2019s East Metro communities and state agencies have been working hard to protect drinking water supplies from PFAS for 20 years,\u201d the agency\u2019s assistant commissioner Kirk Koudelka said. \u201cThis feasibility study points the way forward with options for a more robust environmental cleanup to remove PFAS from surface water and groundwater while preventing the East Metro PFAS plume from spreading further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recommended approach is to create a system of wells that pump out PFAS-contaminated groundwater, treat it and return it back to the aquifer or distribute it to cities for drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>Other recommendations include treating surface water to reduce PFAS concentrations, creating barriers to prevent people and wildlife from coming into contact with contamination and monitoring groundwater and surface water \u201cto ensure cleanup is working as planned\u201d long term, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>The study, funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2018\/09\/17\/3m-settlement-money-paid-in-2018-wont-flow-into-projects-until-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$850 million settlement<\/a> that Minnesota reached with 3M Co. in 2018, focused on the area served by the Valley Branch Watershed District\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/3msettlement.state.mn.us\/projects\/project-1007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Project 1007<\/a> rainwater conveyance system in the Lake Elmo area, according to the release. 3M began manufacturing products containing PFAS in the 1980s.
