{"id":676787,"date":"2026-05-31T22:49:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-31T22:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/676787\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T22:49:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T22:49:14","slug":"naomi-osaka-and-taylor-townsend-arranged-a-dinner-for-black-players-at-the-french-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/676787\/","title":{"rendered":"Naomi Osaka and Taylor Townsend arranged a dinner for Black players at the French Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/naomi-osaka-outfit-french-open-a2851a8bd258fd0cd364e98932c2331b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Naomi Osaka<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-open-taylor-townsend-jelena-ostapenko-argument-451a41f8ca3c766caf9b1f5e9715f425\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Townsend<\/a> are piling up wins on the court at the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tennis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">French Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their success comes after drawing attention off the court for organizing a dinner for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/frances-tiafoe-french-open-beff03261a5ed13f0a4334e3e2e052a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black players<\/a> before the tournament started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt caused a bit of a stir, which I thought was pretty funny because for so long we have been the ones that (are) the minority in a sport where we kind of stick out,\u201d Townsend said about chatter on social media. \u201cAnd now coming together all of a sudden seems like a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Townsend said the reaction from <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYuReafiDFK\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">her Instagram post about the evening<\/a> was \u201cmostly positive,\u201d she said there was also online criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Several comments on Osaka\u2019s and Townsend\u2019s posts suggested the dinner as \u201csegregation,\u201d while another asked, \u201cWhen are the white, Latino, and Asian parties?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It all prompted Townsend to quote a lyric from the rapper Finesse2tymes: \u201cHe said, \u2018It\u2019s cool when they do it; it\u2019s a problem when I do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeping in the rap theme, Townsend quoted Tupac Shakur in her post about the evening: \u201cSome say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice; I say the darker the flesh, then the deeper the roots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides Osaka and Townsend, the other attendees of the dinner were 2025 French Open champion <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/french-open-roland-garros-6a334d4f0be059f8bd1ff84f58b05251\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coco Gauff<\/a>, retiring Frenchman <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/french-open-wawrinka-monfils-roland-garros-7514e7424eac83aa3f5a2872acede6de\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gael Monfils<\/a>, doubles specialist Asia Muhammad and retired player turned TV commentator Chris Eubanks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up, there weren\u2019t a lot of tennis players I could look up to that looked like me,\u201d Osaka \u2014 whose father is from Haiti and mother is from Japan \u2014 said in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYsnp4jCn9c\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">her Instagram post about the dinner<\/a>. \u201cBeing a minority in a sport like tennis is very isolating but the positive is that you keep tabs on everyone that \u2026 being blunt, is black. There\u2019s a fellowship, a camaraderie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt like everyone in that room was a part of my family,\u201d Osaka \u2014 who represents Japan but grew up mostly in the U.S. \u2014 added in a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>For Townsend, \u201cit wasn\u2019t just about the culture, it was healing for us to all be able to speak about our journeys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Gauff\u2019s title defense ended with a loss to Anastasia Potapova on Saturday, Osaka has reached the fourth round in Paris for the first time in her career while showing off her taste for fashion with her elaborate walk-on outfits. American player Townsend and Czech partner Katerina Siniakova \u2014 the top-seeded doubles team \u2014 have won their opening three matches and are into the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Althea Gibson broke tennis\u2019 color barrier<\/p>\n<p>Gauff beat Townsend in the opening round of singles, after which a ceremony was held on Court Philippe-Chatrier to honor the 70th anniversary of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/althea-gibson-us-open-75th-anniversary-e0511b11ad9a7899bb887ff6a9f8abf8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Althea Gibson\u2019s<\/a> 1956 French Open victory \u2014 the first Grand Slam title for a Black tennis player.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson was also the first Black player to compete at a major tennis tournament when she fought with the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association just to get admitted in 1950 to what was then called the U.S. Nationals \u2014 now the U.S. Open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaylor and I playing on Philippe-Chatrier is a direct product of Althea Gibson,\u201d Gauff told the crowd after beating Townsend. \u201cIt just shows the importance of breaking barriers in all aspects of the world, but especially in sport. I\u2019m very grateful for people like her and Serena and Venus (Williams), Zina Garrison for paving the way for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Soul Food\u2019 Sunday at Wimbledon<\/p>\n<p>The dinner recalls how going back to the Harlem Renaissance, Black athletes, entertainers, musicians and writers held salons and dinners to celebrate their successes in a familial space.
